Still think Isbell is better than Young's, Dylan's, and Paul Simon's overall best. List the top thirty by Dylan, Simon, and Young, and I bet Isbell's top 30 is better.
I recently realized that I've been subjecting my sons to a ton of "new" music while neglecting a lot of the classics (they're more familiar with Band of Horses than Led Zeppelin). On a recent road trip, I decided to start hitting them with some classics. We did Talking Heads first (mixed bag: they liked Psycho Killer, hated Swamp, which surprised me as I thought the "pirate" feel of the song would be a sure win). Then we did Paul Simon. Do you know how many absolutely legendarily, instantly catchy, amazing songs Paul Simon has?
AFter one listen, my 7 year old was singing "Me and Julio" for the next 3 days.

Paul Simon's catalog is amazing. Even his B-sides are incredibly strong. I mean, you'll be singing Kodachrome for days, but same with Punky's Dilemma.
As a kid, we drove cross-country as a family with only one tape in the car stereo: the Central Park concert by Simon and Garfunkel. That trip was three weeks long, and I still love those songs.

Townes Van Zandt
This.
TVZ's lyrics and vocals blow Jason Isbell out the water.
I was going to say Van Zandt. But this guy doesn't even deserve that recommendation. I almost want to leave TVZ out of this.

Posted by monsterballads this is all subjective. what if he enjoys isbells songs more than those listed?
Who gives a frick? I enjoy Vanilla Ice more than Englebert Humperdink. Doesn't mean Vanilla is the better artist. Dude said Jason Isbell is the greatest singer songwriter ever.

I can't explain why but I just laughed out loud when I read this. It's probably because I can imagine your mannerism while typing it.

He's clearly never heard of Sturgill Simpson, Joe Pug, Caleb Caudle, John Moreland and Lee Bains.

My wife loves all of the above and Isbell and Gregory Alan Isakov and tons of singer song writers. I played Caleb Caudle for her the other day, though, and she said, "Is this some local shite? It sounds like someone you'd go see at open mic night."
In all fairness, though, it often takes a while for music to grow on her. I'll often introduce her to something, and she'll bitch about it. 6 months later, she'll decide she likes it.

Well clearly we are. He's the one that started a thread about it.
