simply does not equal "best singer songwriter ever"

You're talking about putting the guy up against Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor - and the hyperbole just isn't supportable at this point.

Is the kid one of the better young artists? Sure - but he's competing against air, today, and legends from the past.

Let's let it mature a little - let's try to remain objective. I mean, Dylan is one of the top 10 most influential musicians of the past 100 years and he couldn't sing at all.

Try to wrap your mind around that.

By the time Dylan was Isbell's age he had Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, Nashville Skyline, and Blood on the Tracks under his belt. Isbell is great but let's try to keep things in perspective.

You can compare Isbell to a lot of song writers and I'm ok with that. I have been listening to him a lot lately(partly b/c of all of the love he gets on this board, I decided to really get into it) and he is vey solid.

I am not ok, however, with the Dylan comparison. Dylan is one of the 10 most influential artists over the last 100 years. I would argue he is the most influential musician. He is one of the major reasons modern lyrics ever came to have any substantial meaning. You could argue that hip hop began with Dylan. But mostly the guy just write some beautiful, meaningful music. And he did it for about 30 years straight. There were some misses but his catalogue will not be touched by anyone current. A guy like Isbell is already to far into his career to near the rarified air of Bob fvcking Dylan.
