They all have a song or a few that are better than Jason Isbell's best... but overall... as a collective whole he beats them all out. His lyrics are deep, thought provoking, and overall top notch. And we are talking about 30-40 songs that fall in that category. Here's just one of them.

Probably my favorite musician right now. I'm anxious to see what he comes out with next, it's going to be hard to beat southeastern.

No he absolutely is not.

DYLAN, and Paul Simon are infinitely better songwriters than Isbell and I'm a big Isbell fan. He doesn't even belong in the same breath as those three, and to say he's better than Dylan is absolutely disgraceful. You should be embarrassed.

You can't even spell Bob's name right, much less judge his enormous repertoire of some of the greatest songs ever written.

Again, you should be embarrassed.

God damn, I was a bit drunk and had Dillon Hodges on the mind.. calm down dude...

Still think Isbell is better than Young's, Dylan's, and Paul Simon's overall best. List the top thirty by Dylan, Simon, and Young, and I bet Isbell's top 30 is better.

And remember, I said singer/songwriter.. Dylan and Young are awful singers.

Lmao. Isbell is great but he hasn't jumped guys like Jim Croce, Willie, Kristopherson, Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt to get near the rarified air of Bob frickin Dylan. I believe your gump is showing.

Neil Young is a phenomenal vocal talent. One of the best high registers in the business.

And Bob Dylan is well.....

TVZ's lyrics and vocals blow Jason Isbell out the water.

I like Isbell a lot, but he wasn't even the best songwriter in the Drive by Truckers (Mike Cooley is a god). And while his leaving the band probably saved his life, and that's a good thing, I do think his songs are missing the edge they had when he was writing for three guitars. It's like he's afraid of going back to that high gear, for what it might do to him as a person. Which I certainly respect, but his solo stuff all feels a bit too restrained.

cooley and patterson wrote a lot of corny shite that I can't take seriously. I only liked the isbell songs in DBT.

I have. He's pretty great. But I do feel like he is afraid of truly letting go like he used to. I saw him in the Truckers as well. Cooley is such a gifted songwriter in his ability to tell stories from so many multiple perspectives. The best example is how he can write a song from his angry neighbor's perspective in "Guitar Man Upstairs" or the duel of "Uncle Frank" with Isbell's "TVA". Cooley likely supports the TVA, yet he can write a scathing indictment of it.

But Goddamn Lonely Love is a perfect song.
