I don't think I've ever seen a thread on him on this board...which I find strange. He's been consistently putting out quality music for over 20 years now.

I remember the first time I heard him...on a friend's boat in 2004, the album "On and On", which is quite possibly a perfect boat / beach album. I enjoyed it a lot and he seemed to become incredibly popular over the next few years, especially after the albums "In Between Dreams" and the song "Upside Down" came out along with the Curious George Soundtrack. By this time, I was kind of sick of him and his music became an annoyance to me.

Years later, I rediscovered him and have really enjoyed music from all of his albums. Musically, he's not breaking any ground or anything, but he's a great song writer and his stuff always puts me in a good mood.

His latest album came out a couple weeks ago and is pretty solid. Give it a listen. "One Step Ahead"

Good music but it all sounds similar. I guess you could call that consistent. Good music to get high and sit on the beach to.

Definitely great music to fill a lot of laid back scenarios.

It's really good decompression music for the background.

That being said, I saw him live at the 2nd year of Bonnaroo and it had to be the most boring show I've ever seen.

His songs are great for chilling to.

Fun show to see outdoors, last time I saw him at the gorge was awesome.

Similar to O.A.R, jack johnson is someone I'd never heard of until I got to college, listened to sparingly because it was popular at the time and was on at various places I happened to be at, and never thought of again after graduating.

I can sort of see it, and I actually lumped JJ in with OAR when I went through my phase of being annoyed by that music, also while I was in college. But OAR...ugh no. I still can't listen to them and I never really liked them. JJ has staying power IMO.

I'll put it on while we are out by the pool or in a kid's room when they go to sleep

I like it, but it does all sound the same after a while

He’s the younger generations’ Jimmy Buffett.

ETA- mellow, laid back, inoffensive music. Good for some song-along songs and for background sounds.

Saw him open for Ben Harper like 20 years ago.

All I remember was he played an acoustic guitar (very poorly) and was barefoot.

Ahh yes. The old "look how chill I am" barefoot performer. RIDICULOUSLY STUPID. All I can think about is that fat turd guitar player on the goo goo dolls I saw playing barefoot on an "in the studio" special when this is mentioned. Only hot, young chicks can pull this off.

And I say this even though I truly like a handful of Johnson's songs. He's not reinventing the wheel, but as others have posted, his tunes can be good at a relaxed get together. I would describe him as a poor man's Jimmy Buffett, who has created an empire off of marginal talent and "selling the dream".

Must suck to be miserable.

Fav Jack Johnson story:
Opened up for sublime and was a huge Bradley nowell fan.
Bradley was strung out, and was like an hr late.
Jack kept playing, but crowd was restless and was there for Sublime (early 90’s).
Bradley was/is hero for Jack.
Bradley stumbles up, mutters thanks to Jack, goes on and performs.
It was the only time the two ever spoke.

His 2002 album with Flake has one of the best lines...."It seems to me maybe, pretty much always means no"

My wife’s favorite musician. We’ve seen him a few times, and he puts on a great show. He is not trying to be Jimmy Buffet. He seems content with his modest crowds and just playing music he likes. I love Buffet too, but those shows have become a circus.

My favorite Buffet story - a friend saw his show in a smaller venue in Vegas, probably 15 years ago. At the time, my friend was loving Corona beer. You could only buy Landshark at the show. Buffet goes on one of his political rants (does he still do this?) and complaining about oil companies monopolies. My friend said he wanted to yell, “Hey MFer, why can’t I buy a Corona at your show?” But he didn’t want to get kicked out since his room was already comped.

I totally agree about Johnson. I don't think he's aspiring to be another Buffet, I just think that is a viable comparison musically.

The reason I agree with you about Johnson is years ago I was friends with an actor that made a good living in a few movies and tv shows, but mostly in commercials. He was THRILLED he wasn't super famous, but had plenty of money to live on. I would imagine that being super famous (and rich) isn't all it's cracked up to be. Jack Johnson can probably go anywhere he wants and most people wouldn't know who he is.
