According to Dave Mustaine, both he and Hetfield are the best metal rhythm guitar players of all time.

If you’re asking about musical contributions? Yeah, Hetfield’s a tough act to follow: hooks, riffs, sustained success spanning multiple decades, all while fronting and singing for the band.

Technical ability? Probably not. I’m sure there’s some autistic 9 year olds and Asians on YouTube that blow him out of the water.

Greatest of all time? There’s an argument to be made. I’d probably put Dave Grohl in the mix even though I’m not a huge Foo Fighters fan.

When one first starts listening to Metallica, especially focusing on guitar as a young impressionable early guitarist, Kirk's solos stand out. You learn them, play them, understand what makes them. Then you realize he is actually not that good although his solos add to the Metallica sound.

You realize James is what makes the band go on all fronts and that his playing and style is more impressive than what Kirk does. James' few solos are generally more memorable and melodic despite less pizazz, minus a few classic Kirk solos.

Just my thoughts on the matter - James is probably best metal rhythm player of all time considering context of how important he is to metal.

Other contenders Dime, Mustaine, Smith/Murray, but I personally like John Schaffer of Iced Earth - the master of galloping.

Metal? Maybe. I think Mustaine was the best and if he had continued to be a part of Metallica they could have been up there with the greatest rock bands ever.

But to think Hetfield is equal to someone like Keith Richards interns of laying down riffs I just can’t agree. This is not a knock on Hetfield, but I don’t think Enter Sandman holds a candle to Satisfaction

Honestly if we are just blanket talking Rythm guitar Bob Weir is right up there. It’s a different style and purpose but he drives Grateful Dead as well as anyone could ever hope. Just watch “The Other One” to see how important he is.

LOL, if we're extending the landscape to general rock and metal as well as thrash rhythm guitarists, the best ever - EVER - was Edward Van Halen. Hands down, no question, no hesitation.

EVH was as tight of a rhythm player as he was an innovator for lead players. Pull out your old DLR-era vinyl and try to truly play along with the entire record of your choice. Not only are the leads so difficult to get, the rhythms are just as difficult to really, truly nail in proper time.

And done in the "capture what they sound like live" Ted Templeman/Donn Landee one-track, one-take era ... no Pro Tools, no punch in to fix flub every other run, and no copy and paste and paste and paste and paste to extend a good run for minutes upon minutes.

EVH had this swing to his rhythm playing that is nearly impossible to perfect, with everything else he was doing (the stepping out into leads and right back into the groove, volume knob manipulation, etc) it is truly magic.

Favorite rhythms for me are on Fair Warning, Mean Streets and Unchained especially.

Personal rhythm guitarist favorite for me is still Hendrix but EVH is way up there. Both are similar in that people tune in to their solos but the rhythm work is the real star.

Nope. Death Angel is my no. 1. James and Lars wrote all of the solos for Kirk and told him to play what they wrote exactly. frick those guys. James is a great rythym player, but frick James.

Metallica is already probably celebrated as that..and I assume you meant metal because they aren't rock music.

Since the early 80s..they have stayed relevant and can still sell out a tour.

Its also likely that James has played to more people than anyone else, ever. Look at their audiences..still.

Probably yes and yes. Only Mustaine is in the same ballpark - and frankly, the best Megadeth rhythms are the overall best. He's essentially playing lead back there.

Pretty much my line of thinking. I consider Hetfield the best rhythm guitarist. Mustaine writes incredible stuff, but his rhythm is practically lead. Some of my favorites are the lesser acknowledged songs like My Darkest Hour and Mary Jane. But in most Megadeth songs there’s so much going on, it’s hard to call it pure rhythm guitar.

Malcolm gets a nod for being one of the purest rhythm guitarists - few guys are content to just stand in the background crunching out chords like he did so melodically. But when you look at PRIME Metallica, and that catalog of work, Hetfield is the master.

And I appreciate good rhythm guitarists because I’ve been playing metal rhythm guitar for 40 years...mostly because I’m too lazy to put in the work to learn lead.

ETA: As much as I love Metallica, and as exciting as it would have been to see what they would have churned out if Mustaine had remained in the band, I thank God every day that he got the boot. Because I wouldn’t want to live in a world where there is no Megadeth.

He’s one of the fathers of thrash with legendary downpicking endurance. Those first few albums are legendary and really helped define and lay the groundwork of what was to come in metal.

Agreed! While Kirk has his place in the thrash scene he is massively overrated by most casual fans. Learn to play his solos and it’s mostly the same pentatonic double stop licks saturated in wah. He does have a few melodic solos but those are much more rare.

Mustaine is the far superior riff architect and plays way harder hit while singing. Hetfield is a much better soloist though

Dime excelled at both. He was the best guitarist in the world. There was no one quite like him. Eddie Van Halen even said so.
