You've got a situation more complicated than I would ever deal with.

If you already have gigs lined up, you will need to do those, but I would be looking for a way out, and I wouldn't do any of my own material with them.

My first thought too was why not have the cover band AND the original band. The former project can make a few bucks to make up for when the latter project runs in the red haha.

Seriously, everyone gets a preferred project to look forward too, and a huge plus ... they get better at honing individually what they need to bring to each game. And my hunch is that the ideal project direction will make itself clear after you actually turn a few laps in both scenarios. The cream will truly rise to the top, whether it's the project or the individuals who comprise them.

We have about 5 weeks until our first possible show and need to decide where to focus our time. Everyone has a full time job and another band that takes priority over this one.

I’d say stick to the fun covers blowing off steam and can always work in an original here and there for entertainment

I think you nailed the point that this should be a fun and not super serious gig for everyone involved.

Especially seeing that you are the leader, I think you have to do this. Still might fail, but b. is a guaranteed fail and c. seems counterproductive.

I mean, "d." - you can try to actively recruit the guys who are good, but want to just do covers. "Leadership" is a thing. Engage that part of them that got into music in the first place.

A band can't be a democracy regardless if everyone has a say in multiple facets or decisions. There always has to be one person to take charge.

KingBob,...You need a manager.I will send you some paperwork, just sign it and return to me and I will help. You dont even need to read the documents as it's just standard band/manager lingo putting you in charge of the music.

Play sets with mostly covers but sprinkle in your originals. True music fans will appreciate this. Just don't let ego get in the way of compromise and hearing your band mates out. Ego is the killer of bands.

That means time is even more limited than usual and you aren't doing this project to feed yourself. I would stick with the originals but do some covers in your set as well. Luckily with Baton Rouge there is some support around original music (although most is for singer/songwriter types). I played in an originals band for a brief time whole I was down there and we managed to play all original sets somewhat frequently (every 6-8 or so) and it kept it fun.

There was a group called The Rakers that were a bunch of LSU professors who did 70s style punk stuff that may be good to reach out to about trying to do some joint shows. You never know who swings by the Dragon, you may be able to do a few opening sets there as well.

Or the opposite. Do originals and mix in those covers in live gigs.

Give the originals a go, you can always fall back on covers if/when that fails...

Your problems sound gay. A 30+ year old man playing pop-punk covers is sad as frick.

With pop punk covers? Maybe in 2003
