I lean towards the opinion that they’re underrated. Everyone knows them for Mr. Jones but they have many incredible songs like; rain king, Omaha, recovering the satellites, Mrs. potter’s Lullaby, etc

I think they’re one of the top bands of the 90s, which was an era filled with great music.

Admittedly I’ve heard very little of them, but from what I’ve heard I’m not a fan at all. Extremely whiny and melodramatic.

I think they are much better than they get credit for, especially the lead singer and his song writing abilities.

Gave it a listen. I just can’t stand his voice.

My favorite 90s band. Mr. Jones is a terrific song.

Also love their song at the end of the movie Rounders.

August And Everything After is a great album, but have they done much on that level since that?

Anna Begins and Round Here are great songs for sure.

Counting Crows would be in my top 5 favorite 90s bands. Their songwriting is on another level. I enjoy their first four albums:

August and Everything After
Recovering the Satellites
This Desert Life
Hard Candy

August is the best album. I really think they're one of those bands where you need to listen to the entire album on a long road trip rather than picking out a handful of the singles.

I like them. Saw them at the Varsity in '94. Very good live band.

I always liked their 2nd album better than August...

But after seeing them live in the late 90's, I lost interest in them. Duritz was hammered and incoherent and it was not a good show.

They're terrible live. I really like their songs but in concert, Duritz is even more whiny and he somehow feels compelled to change the melodies of the songs he's singing. A little variation is fine but my God man, you wrote it the way you did for a reason.

This is it; they're (well, really just Adam D) awful live. Outstanding studio tracks, big fan of plenty of songs. Live stuff is un-listenable due to the above.

Edit: Same could be said for The Wallflowers, Jacob Dylan suffers from the same issue with singing the way they recorded it, the way that made them famous.

Strongly disagree they're bad live

I can understand being annoyed by some of the song variations, but I've probably seen CC like 5-6 times spanning a decade and it was always very well done and entertaining. Some great covers too.

They're ok. I can't listen to them very often but I don't mind their music, besides that damn parking lot song. I wore out Mr. Jones in high school.

Disagree with the live response. Saw them 4-5 years ago in the woodlands. Not a big fan but was very surprised when I saw them that they put on a really good show..
Enough to want to go see them again when they came back through.

Liked them until I saw them live.

Yuck.

Incessant whining. Just couldn't deal with it. Left and quit listening to them.
