Has any band killed a genre like Nirvana killed hair band rock?

Kurt and the boys singlehandedly wiped out an entire type of music when they came on the scene. Maybe Beatles with Sgt Pepper?

That was actually already underway with Guns 'N Roses and Metallica's popular period, but grunge didn't help.

In reality, hair metal became a satire of a parody of itself. It was silly to begin with and doomed to fail.

But, man, some of those cats could play.

thank God for the punk backlash... because the Bee Gees (along with Village People, Donna Summer, etc.)had almost killed guitar based rock bands in the late 70's

You are giving Nirvana way, way too much credit.

Hair metal was on the way out anyway. And like someone earlier said, GnR and Metallica started the process. The Grunge scene, which included much more than Nirvana helped put the nail in the coffin, but they certainly didn’t do it alone.

Indeed. George Lynch, Phil Collen, Steve Clark, Jake E. Lee, Zakk Wylde, Reb Beach, C.C. Deville, Vito Bratta, Warren DeMartini, Robin Crosby, Vinnie Vincent, Steve Stevens...so many incredible players...

My personal take: Nirvana had a hit single at a time when the entire genre was ready to break out. It was more than a decade in the making and each wave of bands got less artistically coded and incorporated more rock/pop into what they were doing. Nirvana just happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

My second assertion is that "hair metal" was actually making better music than ever at the time alt-rock commandeered the market. When Guns n Roses got popular, a lot of the other bands got grittier and bluesier to keep up. I guess it depends on what you valued in that kind of music but trading pageant hair and spandex for biker imagery seemed to be an improvement IMO.

nirvana unseated michael jackson, prince and madonna for the #1 song on the billboard charts when smells like teen spirit broke out.

that is the kind of power they had at the time.

Cobain ripped off the Pixies for SLTS.

Pixies - U mass

eta and seattle grunge scene was alive and well waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before nirvana.

mudhoney, melvins, L7 etc.

also janes addiction was already at their peak.

Cobain readily admitted that he ripped off the Pixies. That’s no big secret.

Also, saying Nirvana killed hair metal isn’t to say that they were the best grunge band, or that they were the genesis of the genre. But none of the bands you mentioned had mainstream success on the level Nirvana did, and likely wouldn’t have had as much exposure as they eventually did had Nirvana not blown up.

i would argue jane's addiction was almost as big as nirvana back in the day.

nirvana got that one hit that opened the floodgates for them.

Yep. Obliterated the poor camel. We can say what we want about there being better, more talented bands, with better quality songs, but that song is one of the most important singular songs in the history of music.
