huge THANKS to the late Bill Graham who not only found Santana, he managed the band and put them on the map. Woodstock promoter Michael Lang was having a hard time planning the 3-day-long event and reached out to Graham asking for help. Graham agreed to help ONLY if Lang put Sanatana on the list of performers.
Sanatana was expected to play late Saturday around midnight. In the early afternoon, at around 2:00 pm, the band was suddenly rushed on stage, and told it was now or never. They performed a 45-minute set of eight songs, of which “Soul Sacrifice” — near the end of their set and including a famous drum solo by Michael Shrieve — was one of the big hits of the festival.
And now you know the rest of the story.

One of my all time favorite guitarists from the 60's-70's.
A lot of snob guitarists/musicians like to dismiss Carlos' playing as being too repetitive but he's among the top 20 influential guitarists of the past 60 years, maybe top 10.

He must have been quite young when he played Woodstock!

Fun Fact: The editor for The French Connection edited the famous car chase sequence to Santana's "Oye Como Va."

First guitarist I was exposed to. Sometime around 1973 or so. I was 4. Only because Santana was the group's name as well
Didn't know who Jimmy Page, Hendrix or David Gilmour but my mom being a pot smoker back in the day, I knew who their bands were at that time.
