quote:Hey let’s list awesome guitarists and say they’re not good.
Jimmy Page (good stage presence but ripped off essentially everything) Prince (good technically, but made horrible music) EVH (all flash) Chuck Berry (good for his time, but that's where it ends) Joe Bonamassa BB King (awful) Neil Young (simply awful) Slash (crap) Kurt Cobain (sucked) Kirk Hammett

Danny Gatton. I tried, I really tried. Was hell of a guitar player, but just didn’t work for me.

Then the title of this thread should be " Guitar players that you don't like very much, even if you can't play as well."
What a goofy way to look at a topic on a message board lol
Should I never comment on a NFL qb when ive never been a franchise qb either?

So you are equating guitar playing, or music, to a competition? You must be a big fan of shows like American Idol and the voice. My old crazy Aunt loves those shows.

Slow his stuff way down and it’s not very precise.
He's never really been known for his virtuosity IMO. He could write really catchy riffs though.

It's more than that. He really did a fantastic job of conveying the essence of the songs. The constant climbing progression of Kashmir, while mixing in some licks that borrow from the religious and musical sounds from the region, was one of the greatest examples of "playing for the song" That I have ever heard. He's not just playing licks, he's underlining the mystique, and did it perfectly. I say this as a guy who isn't a huge LZ fan.
If you are a guitar player, working on some new songs, and you think about having to be faster than so and so, more bluesy than anybody, and grungier than all get out, you lost already. Your obligation is to the song.

No some of the ones I mentioned are "good". However they're all overrated.

Who in the hell has ever rated Paul Stanley? If anyone ever talks about a Kiss guitarist it is always Ace Frehley

Mikey. Widespread Panic. Its a linear mess and a muddled composition.

Let's say you don't think for example, Clapton's Lay Down Sally is good...I would like to hear your improved version. You might convince me that way.
What a stupid take.
Are you really suggesting that unless you are guitar expert, you can’t dislike a particular guitarist?

Kieth Richards & Jeff Beck

I've read that was more of a look at this a-hole... doing a staged show... after everyone had said upfront they were going to do the song more subdued)
This...Prince was an excellent guitarist but he definitely went overboard and was showboating on WMGGW's. Clapton's version was more precise and fit the song. The look on their faces was more like "look at this hotdog trying to steal the show" instead of honoring George.

If you read my posts, you see that I don't care if you come out and say " I don't care for this style or that", I just don't care for calling anybody overrated only because you don't like their style. A lot of the guys getting named did some great stuff, it just may not be what you like, but there were a crapload of people that did like it.
I started by trying to learn those overrated guy's songs, and I was killing it at the campfires. You damn kids today...yall need to stay off my lawn.

I think Pete Townsend is better known for his song writing prowess instead of his gtr playing, particularly lead gtr. He was an outstanding rhythm gtr player though.

I have read this entire thread and finally there is something that everyone should be able to agree with.
