Jimmy Page.

Mikey. Widespread Panic. Its a linear mess and a muddled composition.
I don't think anyone ranks Michael Houser as a top guitarist. But he did have a wonderful tone, and knew how to work his pedals, and wrote some great hooks, and songs.

guitarists that just didn't do it for you
Slash couldn't bend a note to proper pitch for 10 million dollars. Being a hair flat on all of his bends is part of his schtick, but it makes him very one dimensional IMHO.
Bruce Springsteen hasn't plugged in his guitar since 1970.
Clapton in Creem was some monotonous bullshite pentatonic runs with a wah pedal. There, I said it.

Don't get me wrong, I love U2 as a band
I don't agree with this at all.

Hendrix was a great guitar player, he just didn't impress me with his style.
He was singlehandedly reinventing rock/blues electric guitar while the Beatles were singing about holding some broads hand.

Mick Ralphs of Bad Company. I really like the group, and while his playing has great hooks, his solos are pretty basic and simple.

Page.
Slow his stuff way down and it’s not very precise.
Holy shite, how could anyone think Page is overrated ??
Just watch this clip starting at about the 7:15 mark...Pure rock and roll at its best.
Whole Lotta Love
In addition to being a phenomenal guitarist, he is a great producer, and had fantastic stage presence.

Page was technically a pretty damn good guitarist. That can't be argued, but you also can't overlook the fact that he was a musical thief.
Btw, I'd add The Edge to this list. He's just not good.

I have read this entire thread and finally there is something that everyone should be able to agree with.
Well, I mean he plays bass so there is that.

as far as bassists, I think that Phil Lesh is kind of overrated. And I am big Dead fan.

That seems like more than a slight exaggeration. The Beatles did a full evolution of their sound and released a ton of great songs/albums before Hendrix ever recorded a single demo.

Mick Ralphs of Bad Company

But with the Bad Co sound/vibe I thought Mick Ralph's playing was spot on- not overdone but gave you enough gas that you knew he could play

Oh and I forgot Angus Young. Again, I like what AC/DC did but for me, Angus just doesn't wow me with his guitar playing.

(as for Misters Lynne and Petty...I've read that was more of a look at this a-hole... doing a staged show... after everyone had said upfront they were going to do the song more subdued)
That’s what I always took from it.
And Prince is an overrated guitar player.

Regardless, the solo was complete garbage.

This is true, too.

Adding EVH in the list shows me you have not one iota of an idea on music.
He was an absolute innovator not only on the guitar but with equipment. Ask every famous guitar player who inspired them and a very high % has Eddie in their list.
I'll add Ace Frehley

No he wasn’t. You have your dates mixed up.
