Staley, Cornell, Lanegan?

What do you think?

Cornell and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what a vocalist is.

Layne Staley. Watch the live version of Love Hate Love at the Moore in Seattle. Debate is over....

Cornell and there’s no comparison. One of the best vocalists across any genre.

Staley was awesome, but not on the same level.

Cornell. There were so many great voices from that scene, but they look like one trick ponies next to Cornell.

I go back and forth between Staley and Cornell. I love both of their voices. If I had to choose I’d say Staley because of the grit and emotion in his voice.

Yes

He sounded good during the unplugged but he had withered away so much from the drug use it was not peak Staley.

The entire group of Seattle grunge bands had incredible vocalist. It wouldn’t be fair to claim just one because, while all being called “grunge” actually had different sounds between them. Each band was unique and the lead singer fit each band perfectly. The one exception was Cornell. His range was just above the rest where he has the grunge roots, but the ability to switch bands/sounds and still nail it. If you had to pick one it’s Chris.

The other odd ball in the group is Cobain. His songwriting and melodic structure made him so unique. Many would claim he is probably the lesser of the true “vocalist.”He had his own sound that worked perfect for his band. But you take his voice and plug it in any other band and it’s a disaster. But at the same time, you can’t have anyone else but Kurt sing Nirvana.

I loved Cobain's voice... I loved Arm's voice... But for "best" I'd say Lanegan...

I am in agreement on Lanegan. Cornell was a better vocalist, but Mark's whiskey-soaked and cigarette-tinged vocals will always be more "grunge" to me.

It's funny how the internet has turned on Nirvana and Cobain over the years. Wall to wall fake news.

-He was murdered
-Nirvana was playing to empty venues by the time he died
-Cobain couldn't sing
-He was never the voice of a generation
-He was jealous because he knew Grohl's band was going to be bigger than Nirvana
-The news didn't cover his death till several days after he was found
-His distaste for fame was bullshite mythology and he actually loved it

...On and on. We'll get all this turned around to the way we want it. It just takes a few decades of repeating disinformation till it becomes the truth.
