Cornell and Staley seem like the "correct" answers I suppose, however Shannon Hoon had this eerily beautiful tone that I still appreciate to this day every time I hear "Change".
His voice was absolute shite in his last performances but damn he was great early on
Had a lot of Blind Melon, STP and Screaming Trees on my sandbox 'work' playlist

Probably Chris Cornell, but Eddie Vedder has some pipes. Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Gutter Twins, some stuff with Queens of the Stone Age) has a great voice too.
I put all them before Layne Staley, mainly because I like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam more than Alice in Chains.

His voice was the most copied for a reason.
Because it's not that hard to sing the way he does.

I disagree. Especially with early 90's Vedder and 2000. He had a mid late 90 marble mouth singing style. I grew bored with it. Now he is still good but an aging singer and voice.

Their unplugged performance was mentioned. There is also a EARLY Tower Records album promo show that they did when Ten dropped. It is amazing. He has to put the mic behind his back to sing and not overwhelm the room and acoustic instruments.

Not to state the obvious but singing is alot more that heavy metal type wailing. Metal is full of dudes with insane range Im a huge cornell fan and its not laughable whatsoever to compare Plant

Who the hell said anything about “wailing”? Also, way to drag metal through the mud for some odd reason.

I thought we were discussing rock? Besides, classically trained metal vocalists would shite all over Plant in any metric.

And yes, it kind of is laughable. Plant’s lower register just pales in comparison to other vocalists. His voice could make him sound like a banshee, but it’s also very grating at times. In the words of Bon Scott, Plant often sounded like a whining 13-year-old girl.

ALSO, Plant frickin artificially manipulated his vocals in studio. That’s cool from an artistic standpoint, but not so much when you’re trying to argue who is a superior vocalist.

If I wanted a blues rock singer who could do it all, I’d opt for Glenn Hughes, David Coverdale, Ian Gillian, or a number of Led Zeppelin’s contemporaries over Plant.

Dude what How was what i said negative?

Am i wrong that guys like bruce dickinson, rob halford, king diamond, geoff tate, axl rose etc etc have comparable range. I feel like all those guys could nail most soundgarden songs

And i love cornell, for the record. Hell i remember where i was the first time i ever heard louder than love

I just dont think that bone shattering scream is all that makes a great vocalist. Not that thats all chris could do

None of those guys mentioned at the beginning could pull of Temple of the Dog the way Cornell did. He was one of a kind.

Yet he was only good in the beginning. After Vedder's part, which is fantastic, he starts his usual screaming shite and ruins the song.

You're referring to Hunger Strike. Listen to:

Say Hello 2 Heaven
Call Me a Dog
Times of Trouble
Four Walled World

Then get back with me on how Vedder > Cornell.

Ooops. Yeah, I should have mentioned that.

I don't need to listen to any more to know that. I am just not a Cornell fan. Hell, people here like AIC vocals, and I find those to be the most painful vocals in all of music other than Don't Follow.

I want to say that’s the first time I heard the song “wash”. It was incredible.

Could be wrong, but it was a very early acoustic show in a store. He’s sitting down without a mic killing it.

That's cool. A lot of people aren't a fan of the screaming, which is why I always refer them to Temple of the Dog. Much more melodic vocals.

Badmotorfinger is Cornell's best vocal performance. Superunknown is great too. I was never a big fan of Temple of the Dog. His voice had gotten weaker on Audioslave but was still good.
