It's a silly question but Yeah Yeah Yeahs Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow at the Fillmore West inspired me the most.

I went to this one in 1988 in Los Angeles. Metallica was the second act and the crowd went nuts and rushed the stage. The band was unplugged for at least a half hour until people calmed down and went back to their seats. It was a near riot, helicopters flying over head...great time for a 17 year old.

Just about any ABB concert you can find pre-Duane's death. Fillmore East is a popular answer, due to the sound quality, but for my money, 9/19/1971 at SUNY Stonybrook takes the cake. The versions of Dreams, Blue Sky, and You Don't Love Me are absolutely incredible - the boys were on fire. Butch Trucks would have told you that the Fillmore East set was fair-to-middlin' for their live performances.

Jerry just keeps digging and finding more and more. Just an amazingly enthusiastic and euphoric performance from he and Brent.

You were actually at this show? That is incredible. The YouTube footage of the Metallica performance with all the fans rushing the field is amazing. It looked like a borderline riot with all the chairs being tossed towards that stage. If you haven't seen this footage look it up. I wish I could have seen them in their 80's prime.

1990, I think. I think he came 2 years in a row on his winter tour.

I know he played the PMAC in 1995 for the Fruitcakes tour. It was a great show but I wouldn't call it the GOAT. There was flooding going on and he closed with Louisiana 1927 which was a nice touch.

Best I've seen was the first Little Feat show after Lowell George died; that was on the Riverboat President as part of Jazz Fest in the late 80's.

The GOAT live performance? Probably one of The Who concerts; many to choose from in the late 60's to early 70's, or Zappa, or Tull, or the Dead; depends on your taste.

Grateful Dead @ Fillmore West - 2/28/69 is one of my favorites. 5/21/77 at Lakeland Civic Center is great too and a really under appreciated show.

Allman Bros @ Fillmore West 2/11/70 is a scortcher too

I would go with Live at Leeds.

Also, from Monterrey Pop Festival, Janis Joplin : Ball and Chain

and from Woodstock Jimi Hendrix "anthem" set , "Soul Sacrifice" by Santana, and Sly & the Family Stone medley.

My favorite to watch is Nine Inch Nails at the 1994 Woodstock Festival. I’m not trying to say that is should be considered the greatest ever, but it’s the one I put on more than any other.

I won't argue with Queen at Live Aid.

But Crowded House was a great live act. They stole the show from Peter Gabriel at WOMAD.
