"Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

She's forty-one and her daddy still calls her "baby"
All the folks around Brownsville say she's crazy
'Cause she walks dowtown with a suitcase in her hand
Looking for a mysterious dark-haired man"

"I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line"

I hear the train a comin
It's rolling round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine
Since I don't know when

My lover comes to me with a rose on her bosom
The moon's dancin' purple
All through her black hair
And a ladies-in-waiting she stands 'neath my window
And the sun will rise soon
On the false and the fair

Coming home to a place he'd never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door

She left a lipstick message on the mirror shattered on the bathroom floor
All I could put back together was "never see me no more"

I am an old woman
Named after my mother
My old man is another child that’s grown old
If dreams were lightning
Thunder were desire
This old house would’ve burned down
a long time ago

Livin' hard was easy when I was young and bullet-proof.
I had no chains to bind me, just a guitar and a roof.
Emptied every bottle, when I poured I never missed.
I had blood shot eyes at twenty five or was it twenty six.

I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head

Low down leaving sun
Done, did everything that needs done
Woe is me, why can't I see?
I'd best be leaving well enough alone

"Well, I can't recall, one time in my life
I've felt as lonely as I do tonight
I feel like I could lay down, and get up no more
It's the damndest feelin', I never felt it before"

She tried to hide it by the faded denim clothes she wore
but I knew she’d never been inside a bar before
and I felt like a peasant that had just met a queen
and she knew I saw right through her tight fittin’ jeans

the sunshine walked beside her" ~ Tecumseh Valley Townes Van Zandt

Baby blue with wire wheels
I took her home the day
she was advertised

He said she leaked when it would rain

Well my daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
