I was in my truck earlier this morning and Pancho and Lefty came on. I’ve heard that song a million times in my life but every time I hear it it sends chills down my spine. So in my opinion(which doesn’t mean shite) that’s the greatest country song ever

Definitely in my top 5. One of the most well written and influential songs of all time.

" The silence of a falling star, lights up a purple sky- as I wonder where you are- I'm so lonesome I could cry."
Jeez...
"The Moon just went behind a cloud, to hide his face and cry"

really, I wouldn't make that argument. It's just all emotion. That's why it's so good.

Right musician, wrong song. The correct answer is Lost Highway
oh and I gave you the upvote, because it's certainly one hell of a deserving submission

Did you Know that Hank Williams didn't write that?

great song, but Galveston is better. Same writer.
Jimmy Webb. Incredible writer. Also wrote " The Highwayman", as well as " Up, Up And Away In My Beautiful Balloon"

I did not, and I am now reading up on it. Leon Payne, a blind country musician (hello Ronnie Milsap!), apparently wrote it. Well he did a fantastic job, because this song is legendary.

All are great songs, I'd like to add "Help me make it through the night" and "He stopped loving her today".
