You could make an argument for Aerosmith but I lean towards the Eagles and Beach Boys over them.

Got something against Folk Rock?

How about some recognition for Crosby, Stills, & Nash (and add Young, who was Canadian). Each individual had merit on their own (as well as with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Hollies, and Crazy Horse). All were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame TWICE - individually for their solo work in addition to as a group), and together produced twelve albums with great tracks that emphasized singing and lyrics. A few of their best:

Woodstock
Marrakesh Express
Suite - Judy Blue Eyes
Carry On
Teach Your Children
Love The One You're With
Down By The River
Almost Cut My Hair
Helpless
Ohio
The Cost of Freedom
Our House

No mention for R.E.M.?

I'd go with:
Eagles
Van Halen
Petty
REM
Beach Boys
CCR

The Beach Boys for me...

Often forgotten their influence on The Beatles ....they were fans of each other.

Brian Wilson loved Rubber Soul, and the Beatles said the Pet Sounds pushed them further.

....all the others mentioned there is a case...

surprised no Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers mentions...

I mentioned them. I think their first 6 albums are almost unparalleled.

Metallica is light years better than the Grateful Dead
I've traveled to Arlington and Atlanta to see Metallica for my kids over the last 3 years and I like them fine. I really can't listen much to the Dead, but, what makes Metallica light years or even light weeks better than the Dead?

The Eagles would be my choice. Of the two you polled, Metallica.
