Definitely Appetite for Destruction by GnR.

I was really into Lynyrd Skynyrd before that, but no one would classify Skynyrd as metal, maybe hard rock. I’ve always just thought of them as the quintessential Southern Rock band that was a gumbo of a bunch of different styles.

Also, certain albums got me into certain styles. Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi got me into 80’s rock. The Sickness by Disturbed got me into nu-metal/2000’s era hard rock (even though the album came out in 99 I believe, it opened the door for me to listen to other bands like them that I really got into.

When I think back to when I was introduced to hard rock, it was my older cousin who introduced me to Led Zeppelin when I was like 8 or 9, which caused me to become a serious Led Head for life, eventually collecting every album, including CODA when it was released after Bonham died. Kiss Destroyer was also an influencer, but it came a little later on. As for Metal is concerned, it would almost certainly have to be Ozzy’s “Diary of a Madman”

Technically it would be KoRn’s first album, but my mom confiscated it and took me to a Christian bookstore. And I went home with a Zao cd. Zao influenced a lot of my teenage listening habits.

I was born in 62. Though I am sure there were individual songs that caught my attention, the first album I actually remember buying was

A lot of people rag on Metallica these days, call them overrated, washed up, or whatever. One thing that I find as the mark of a truly great and important band is how many posters in this thread are citing Metallica as their gateway to heavier music, and how many different albums of theirs people are citing.

Laugh at me if you must but this album opened my eyes to all metal music and I never looked back.

I am a prog fan first because my dad gave me a rush CD in like 1996 when I was 12 learning drums and I had outpaced the country and soul stuff I learned on.

This album mixed the hip hop / R&B vibes in well enough for me to give it a real listen and then I moved on to all metal eventually

As a young kid in the 70’s I loved everything about The Beatles, from their early stuff all the way through their breakup. Not a hard rock band of course but my earliest memories of rock guitar distortion was from some of their songs like Sgt Peppers Reprise, Revolution and Helter Skelter. The sound grabbed me instantly and I loved it from the moment I first heard it. As far as albums go I would say as follows…

Hard rock - BOC, Cultosaurus Erectus
Metal - Iron Maiden, Maiden Japan Live EP
