I’ve been listening to a lot yacht rock playlist on spotify lately. I’ve never realized how many good songs Genesis/Phil Collins had. After looking a little more, Genesis put out a lot of albums with not many hits except for 2 albums.
How big was this band in the 70s and 80s? Their 70s catalogue has no hits.

That's all is an all time movie montage song... or at least it should be... everytime I hear it , I think it would be great in movies

The best is The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and that is w/ Peter Gabriel.

genesis was a completely different band with Peter Gabriel as the lead vocalist. Was one of the leaders of the prog/rock movement. Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are albums by the Gabriel led group that are widely considered to be classic prog/rock albums.

For my tastes, they were much better with Gabriel. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is a masterpiece.

They invented gated reverb sound for drums. They can burn in hell for all eternity for that abomination they unleashed upon the music industry.

King Crimson, ELP, early Yes, etc., didn't have lots of hits, either. Frankly, relatively speaking, neither did Pink Floyd.
So, your analysis of Genesis is spot on. Similar to the transformation Yes went through for the 1980s MTV era, Genesis did the same with Phil at the helm. Prog rock in the 70s, pop rock hit machine of the 80s.

Genesis did not create the gated reverb sound, although it was created on sessions for a former member of Genesis. It is believed it was first used on the song "Intruder" off Peter Gabriel's third solo record (Melt) in 1980. It was applied to Phil Collins'(he played drums on a few of the tracks) drum sound after being accidentally discovered while monitoring the drums through the listen mic on the SSL console.
The engineer for that session, and the one given the most credit, was Hugh Padgham (credits include Sting, The Police, XTC, Kate Bush, Mike + The Mechanics, Zappa, Yes, Paul McCartney). The Producer was Steve Lillywhite (U2, XTC, The Psychedelic Furs, The Pogues, Talking Heads, The Thompson Twins).
Phil Collins did make great use of the technique, especially in his solo work like In The Air Tonight.

Post Gabriel and Hackett- DUKE is a really good album. It’s got that concept album feel, the constant refrains throughout, beautiful Collins melodies, great hooks, great lyrics about the breakup of a family, excellent production etc. I listened to the whole album on Sunday, first time in years. Not a classic, but very good.
