Stanley Clarke, Miroslav Vitous, Greg Lake, Percy Jones, Fernando Saunders, Rick Laird (passed yesterday July 4), Alphonso Johnson, Bill MacCormick, Anthony Jackson, Leland Sklar, John Lee.
Got them all on vinyl in various solo and band projects..
This is always a good subject to go search out new artists.

Just checked. No mention of Lemmy Kilmister yet. I forgot to add him in my earlier post. He is also one of my favorites.

Others have covered rock well. I'll add on the jazz side:
Jaco & Mingus have been mentioned but there is no such thing as too much for either.
Oscar Pettiford - died at 37, bebop pioneer
Jimmy Garrison - bassist with Coltrane's great quartet
Ron Carter - became prominent with Miles Davis's 2nd great quintet, and has the most recording credits of any jazz bassists (maybe any bassist?).
Jim Singleton - NOLA's own, such a joyful player
William Parker - along with Hamid Drake, probably THE top rhythm section in avant garde jazz in the last 30 years. Also leader of several ensembles from duos up to big bands.
Kent Kessler - played with Ken Vandermark in varied ensembles that I was fortunate to see several times in the 90s-2000s.

Lemmy was not technically the best player but brought a style that few can duplicate .Definetly a favorite of mine as well.

No love for the Bootzilla? Funk was born when James Brown met Bootsy Collins.

As a bassist myself, a lot of good names in this list.
Three that came to my attention about the same time, just as I was picking up the instrument, and are still the guys I attribute to influencing my playing the most:
Nick Lowe
Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello & The Attractions)
Graham Maby (Joe Jackson Band)

Anyone mention Fonky arse George Porter Jr yet?
The fact that he's an awesome person makes him even better.
