So what is a legitimate replacement for CDs? mp3 and acc files are certainly vastly inferior. Are we just going to take a huge step backwards in the quality of digital music?

going to a lot of concerts/shows I just don't see many people buying CD's. I don't think it's a justifiable cost for bands to even waste their time manufacturing them.

I still buy CDs, both new and used. I also buy vinyl, cassette from time to time, and even reel to reel tape. Hell, I even bought a pre-recorded mini-disc a couple weeks ago.

I buy CDs because I like having a medium that boasts a decent resolution, and I have digital players that are reference level that allow the best from a CD...they can sound phenomenal if given the proper playback gear.

I stream TIDAL high-res (44.1/16 bit) and the CD version of the same album sounds better...it has to do with jitter (digital time alignment/smearing), and the power of the chipset in the player (DAC).

There are also numerous albums that I have onCD that just aren’t available on TIDAL, or any other stream source, so spinning a silver disc is the only option.

Sure do- cd’s & vinyl. I do the Spotify thing for the car and the outside Bluetooth system bc it’s convenient. But on the main rig, it’s strictly vinyl and occasional cd’s, which blow the crappy streaming stuff to pieces. I also like the artwork, lyric sleeve, booklets... something I can hold in my hand.

es, but mostly used. I can buy them for a couple dollars, rip a FLAC using EAC, of the ones I like, to my server and rack the CD's. I have about 1300 CD's and an equal number of albums. They have overlap of content, but each also has it's strengths. Most of the albums were purchased prior to ~1989, when I finally broke down and moved to buying CD's. From 90's to present I've purchased new music, copies of favorite albums, re-issues and various box sets. Some of the same with albums as far as re-issues, box sets and an occasional new issue.

very similar

Although you probably have me on sheer number and quality. I'm up to 1312 Albums / 9671 songs @ about 74 gigs according to iTunes.

Yes, much like with telephones. We pay $1,000 for a phone and $100 a month for shitty quality phone connection where you can hardly understand a caller. Can you hear me Now?

Granny paid $11 a month, and the connection was crystal clear.

Haven’t bought a CD in over 5 years.

And haven’t listened to any of my 300+ CD’s in the last 3 years.

As someone else said, I usually buy CD's of local bands to help support them. I'll also buy a CD if the price of that or a download is is similar. Kind of a "2 for 1" deal-you get one with the other.

I'm also attached to my old iPod. I like carrying 25,000 songs around with me with all my playlists anywhere I go without worrying about streaming. The sound quality of the CD/iPod is drastically better than the sound coming out of my phone. My teens didn't believe it until we compared in my car with 10 speakers/subwoofer.

So CD's, as has been said, Is a "lossless" way to keep music.

And for the folks saying it's a dying technology, I give you the vinyl LP. Amazing how many teens/twenty somethings are telling me about the amazing sound quality of vinyl. Enjoy it while you can, kids.

Same here. An iPod seems like outdated tech these days but it's great having a 160GB disk drive in my car. I have pretty much all of my music on it.

I have a Sony MP3 player with 2500 songs on it (some ripped from CD). I would like to move them into I-tunes but do not understand how to. I am technically illiterate so any dumbed down instruction would be greatly appreciated.

You just drag and drop the files into iTunes. I have a large external drive where I keep all my music along with videos and other stuff. So if I want to add something to iTunes I navigate to the directory on that external drive where it's located, select the files I want to add and drag & drop them into the iTunes window.

You can have the same quality on your iPod or iPhone if you rip your CDs to the Apple Lossless format in iTunes. Then simply do not convert to ACC when you load them on your iPhone.
