Do you play or write music?

I have always sang and played guitar. I consider myself a gifted singer and an average guitar player. But just the past couple months the bug has bit me really hard and I am trying to write songs. I have about 3 semi-finished with a couple more trying to morph into something.
Also been playing with a buddy who is really talented at guitar a couple times a week and we're gonna start doing open mics to see if we can turn that into something more.
edit: guess I'll say that my stuff is like folky, indie type stuff which is also the type of music I like the most.

Yes to both. Prefer writing to playing covers. I don't do it nearly as often as I want. And I never finish anything

I used to write quite a lot. Over the past few years, as life has become more complex with wife and kids, I haven't written nearly as much. It's something I want to pick back up and start doing again.

That’s kind of where I have always been so I’m trying to push through it. Finishing it definitely the hardest part to me right now cuz I want it to be perfect.

Too scared to.
Since most of what I like involve people who dabbled or were consumed by heroin, I’d have to score some smack. The heroin would probably ruin my progress with Marty Schwartz and JustinGuitar lessons too. Lol

yea the effort is something I've never had a lot of inherently, so i'm trying to just say frick it and do it anyway.

I'm a perfectionist too, so I'm overly critical. All of the stuff I write comes from emotional places, so once that moment passes, if I don't finish, it can be difficult to get back to that place.

I play guitar for at least an hour a day, been playing for about a decade.
I've played with groups that wrote music but me personally, I've never written anything. I have mad respect for people who write even the most simple of songs. My brain can't do it.

same man, i feel you. I never want to put anything out there unless it's perfect, and seeing as how nothing is ever perfect, I never put anything out there. That's what I'm trying to get past. Just let go of the perfectionist part and throw it all out.

I've played drums professionally for the last decade or so. I can strum my way through most basic songs on guitar. I've been writing music with a buddy for a few years, and I've also done the cover band scene. To me, writing and recording your own music is BY FAR more rewarding than going the cover route, but covers will get you paid.
