Did anyone here attend the 1985 Live Aid concert, or watch it live on television?

Queen has been one of my favorite bands since I was a little kid. However, I was not alive when Queen was in its prime, nor was I alive before Freddie passed away.

By many accounts, Queen's performance at Live Aid is the one of the best live performances in history.

To anyone that saw it live/on TV - what was it like? In your opinion, is it worthy of the above accolade? Any cool other cool stories about Queen that might not be well known?

There were lots of legendary performances that day - the first performance of Led Zeppelin since Bonham died (which was kind of a let down). Bowie was good. The Who was good (IMHO).

But, Queen was really the best.

Freddie did have a problem with his voice and was not 100% (probably shouldn't have performed, based on medical advice). Just imagine that performance being even better.

It's hard for me to think that there were better live shows back then, then there are now.

Nothing against that time period or the music that came from it, but theres just so much more money spent on the live show these days, it seems.. The stuff slipknot and other bands do, wasn't even thought of back then

I may be wrong though. I just don't remember that level of pyrotechnics being used back then

Kiss were known for their big shows in the 70s. Iron Maiden and Metallica had some huge stage shows in the 80s.

I watched most of it on TV, I was 18 years old. I remember the Queen and U2 performances and not much else.

The biggest story was Phil Collins taking the Concord to perform at both venues

I watched it, I seem to recall because there was an Ozzy/Sabbath reunion, their first, on the bill. But I saw that Queen set and yes, it was simply astonishing.

Edited to add a link to the Ozzy/Sabbath reunion set

I watched it on TV, but I don't remember seeing Queen. Did they even show that performance in the US?

I remember seeing the "Led Zeppelin Reunion" with Phil Collins. It was horrible. And I'll never forget the Mick Jagger and Tina Turner performance and my mom saying how raunchy they were.

They showed it on tape delay in the USA, I think. I remember the Radio Gaga performance with the crowd clapping in unison. That was cool.

I watched all day just to hear the drum intro on Stairway to Heaven and fricking Phil Collins and Jason Bonham fricked it all up.

Tina Turner and Mick Jagger were the highlight for me.

If you're going to a concert for that, you're going for the wrong reasons.

There was plenty of blame to go around, but leave Jason the frick out of it.

That was Tony Thompson of Chic on the other set. Plant unloads on everyone, himself for overdoing it with gigs prior to the show, Page for his out of tune guitar, JPJ for showing up that day and being available to rehearse for about an hour and the drumming, particularly Phil. And Plant and Collins were very good friends and had worked together a lot by that point.

Heard an interview with Phil Collins and he said Plant and Page were not happy with him at all. Looked like they wanted to beat his arse after the set. Part of it was the whole Concorde thing and they kind of felt he was upstaging everyone, and then he comes in and plays like crap.

The big thing for many artists is that the music was, and had to be, better. Live performances were better. No dependence on backing tracks, piped in instruments, etc. Yes, all the giant video screens, special effects, and pyrotechnics add to the theater of it all, but give me a great musical show any day of the week.
