I had to run playoff brackets in order to distill this down to just 5.

Hated that I had to leave behind: Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Elton John and U2.

He said 5 or less...slightly stoopid, slowdive, slash and slipknot didn't make the cut

5 is hard... so I'll leave off the bands that were in their heyday before my time (Beatles, Stones, Kinks, VU, Stooges, MC5, Gram Parsons, Big Star, Beach Boys, Wall of Sound, Brill Building, etc)

Cheap Trick
R.E.M.
The Replacements
Minutemen
Uncle Tupelo

I also chose to ignore many of the British bands from the 80s because.. that would have to be a different list..

Garcia-Grisman (bands)
Billy Strings
Stephen Stills
James Taylor
Sarah Jarosz

For a taste as of lately; nixing formative influences and omitting forever favorites. Because that's entirely another list.
