Combat Rock is one of the single most underrated albums in rock history. That album is great. If only most band's "sell out" album included songs like Ghetto Defendant and Inoculated City. Considering Overpower By Funk was released as a limited single in 1981, it is many rock fans' first exposure to hip hop. Planet Rock and The Message wouldn't come out until the following year.
It is ambitious, and its radio singles are catchy as all hell. It's not London Calling, but the initial negative reaction to Combat Rock had a lot to do with its ambition, not its poppiness.

i was this close to listing a 5-album run from yes, then i forgot about 'tales from topographic oceans' being in the middle of it....oh well.
for the person that listed rush, i'd drop '2112' in the beginning and add 'signals' (or 'exit stage left', if we're counting live albums) at the end....i can't listen to '2112' all the way through, has its share of filler IMO.

Sandinista was the turning point, IMO. I don´t get how people can say 2/3 was filler, when we´re talking about an album with forays into myriad new arenas.
Combat Rock was more of the same, but packed more commercial punch.
ETA Listened to Ghetto Defendant this afternoon, by the way.

I love Sandinista! too, but it won album of the year from the Pazz and Jop poll, making it essentially the most critically acclaimed album the year of its release. It is impossible for the best rated album of the year to be underrated.
I still love what Christagau said about it. Something like "this is the worst album the Clash has ever made, which proves they are the greatest band on earth."

I'm pretty much with you. I'd say that, in a sense, those three albums not only defined the Stones but invented a genre.

What genre would that be?
Certainly three of the best albums by anyone, but I don't think they invented a genre. For one they are all pretty diverse, with flavors of country, soul, gospel, and of course bluesy rock and roll. They did a good job of encompassing all of those on one record but didn't invent anything.

Well, I guess you could argue the term "genre". But those albums, arguably, comprise the genesis of, for lack of a better term, what became "blues rock" (there may be a better term but I'm in a hurry)that stretched from, e.g., Humble Pie through the Black Crowes and beyond. It was an amalgam of blues, early rock n roll and soul. No doubt it lifted styles from earlier artists, but the blend was unique at the time and became its own sound, imo.
