Your hatred of Hootenanny makes me doubt your Mats' fandom. That album is almost a perfect distillation of the Replacements. As for the list, I'd say their best album run includes Sorry Ma and not Don't Tell a Soul. No album that does not feature Bob Stinson on guitar is truly a Mats album... sorry, Slim. Bob was the soul of the Mats.
I'm uncomfortable with best album lists that include EP's, so no on Chronic Town for REM or Come On Pilgrim for the Pixies. Or Stink for the Mats. Though I agree that all are awesome.

Though I'm opposed to any RHCP best of list that cuts off Mother's Milk, by far their best album (not to mention Uplift Mofo Party Plan, another classic record).

I'm a big fan of everything up to and including Green. I like the album cuts on Document a lot more than the The One I Love and End of the World.
You could probably throw Dead Letter Office in there as a replacement for Document, though.

I'd extend that at least through Presence for a 7 album run. If I had to limit it to just 5 then I'd drop I & II and add Physical Graffiti and Presence. I know it's sacrilege for a lot of people but I prefer the later, more progressive, Zeppelin.
