Please, mother mercy
Take me from this place
And the long winded curses
I keep hearing in my head
Words never listen
And teachers never learn
Now I´m warm from the candle
But I feel too cold to burn

Close the door, put out the light.
You know they won't be home tonight.

I took a drive today
Time to emancipate
I guess it was the beatings, made me wise
But I'm not about to give thanks or apologize

This is the first one that always comes to mind for me -

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're trying to be so quiet.

And we are all together

Listen to the wind blow, watch the sun rise
Run in the shadows, damn your love, damn your lies

Hey Joe, where you going' with that gun in your hand

He put the bottle to his head and pulled the trigger

Here I stand, head in hands, turn my face to the wall

"She stands twelve feet above the flood, she stares alone across the water, the loneliness grows and slowly fills her frozen body sliding downwards..."

"Age six, and runs, through white-hot courtyards, past fountains, past fishponds, and the beating sun of China stops. Age six, and runs, through red pavilions,
up hills, past streams of no regret. Tomorrow she'll run no more...."

I'm woven in a fantasy,
I can't believe the things I see
The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
And with each passing day I feel a little more like something dear was lost

It rises now before me,
A dark and silent barrier between,
All I am, and all that I would ever want to be
It's just a travesty,
Towering, marking off the boundaries my spirit would erase

Hard to believe no mention of this one yet:

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

A few of my favorites

Turnpike
"There ain't a thing in the world could take me back like a dark haired girl in a Cadillac on main street of an old forgotten town "

Soundgarden
"Follow me into the desert
As thirsty as you are"

Bingham
"Take me to see the voodoo queen,
Let her put a spell on me"

Ryan Adams
"Ah the night...here it comes again
It's on with the jeans, the jacket and the shirt
How'd I end up feeling so bad
For such a little girl"

Justin Townes Earle
"I swear I see her in my dreams sometimes
Held up in the middle of the night
Shakin like a pistol in a young mans hand
There in the pale moonlight"

Isbell
"Here we sit
Across the table from each other
A thousand miles from both our mothers
Barely old enough to rust"

You can say that I'm one curly fry in the box of the regular
Messing with the flavor oh the flavor that you savor
Saving me for last but you better not eat me at all

Ain't found a way to kill me yet
Eyes burn with stinging sweat
Seems every path leads me to nowhere
Wife and kids household pet
Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere

What does friend mean to you?
A word so wrongfully abused
Are you like me, confused
All included but you
Alone...

I was tumbling through your shadow as you were dancing in the rain.
I was learning the steps as I followed the disappearing tracks that remained

Whiskey river, take my mind
Don't let her memory torture me.
Whiskey River, don't run dry
