Bands you don't understand their lack of popularity

Back in the day a few bands I loved that weren't overly popular - Montrose

Anything Dax Riggs was involved in. Popular locally but never really took off on a wider scale. Guy has a set of pipes on him.

I actually liked Local H but they were always kinda pegged as a one hit wonder.

James Hall and the Pleasure Club
Or really any of that guy’s projects.

You Am I
The theory is that they were too Australian.. I guess I can see that, but the songs are way too good..

I’ll exclude literally any band from the last 10 years because our entire concept of “popularity” has been flipped on its head along with everything else about the music industry.
I’ll also exclude bands from the late 80’s that got buried by the rapid shift from hair metal to grunge. Those acts just had the misfortune of getting their big break at the end of a genre rather than at the beginning.
Montrose is a great pick.

Just based on the couple of songs that I heard from him, Aldo Nova should have been bigger in the 80s.
Pixies should have been a lot more popular, imo.

Other than their name, I don’t get why The New Pornographers aren’t all over the radio.

The king of this category: Roxy Music
They were huge in England but for some reason never broke in America. They were very similar in sound to David Bowie and fashion plate/matinee idol Bryan Ferry had his look stolen by Bowie -- yes, hippie Bowie saw the unsigned RM in a club and immediately aped Ferry's style.
Also:
Mott The Hoople -- they were moderately successful in the states but should have been much bigger.
The New York Dolls - They had the sound of the Stones, the Glam look and a sense of humor. Maybe they were too comical -- the mainstream audience is generally very earnest about their music. The very similar Dictators were even less successful, and The Ramones sold very modestly indeed.
Of these bands in the NYC scene only Kiss, who looked ludicrous but were never overtly self-parodying in the music, became major stars. Someone should write a book about these four bands and their careers. I've got the perfect title: New York Groove.

Roxy Music
I thought they've held their own in terms of popularity over the years. Their better stuff wasn't so popular but was really good. Brian Ferry perhaps the best voice ever

Anytime I hear them I sort of stop what I'm doing to go on a quick journey.

Another band I've always been very fond of that had limited popularity was Pure Prairie League

Rival Sons
Awesome hard rock band that opened for Black Sabbath on their final tour, yet still haven't gained a lot of popularity.
