The Gaslight Anthem came too late. The singer's newest album is fricking great.

Hell, both these two bands got to be about as popular as their respective genres allowed. The Gaslight Anthem is a punk band that escaped that genre ghetto in a way that very few bands do.
Unfortunately, I truly suck at this kind of thought exercise, so I'm not sure who I'd go with.

Great Band.
I'll add Driving and Crying. They were locally popular in the south, and are kind of sandwiched in between REM and Hottie and the Blowfish, both of which blew up in the late 80's, early 90's. They never really gained national appeal.

The Kentucky Headhunters
First album was a monster....album of the year, they were best new group of the year...and then, nothing. Very talented but I guess they shot their wad on the first album.

Jellyfish. Early 90’s. Put out two amazing albums & then broke up.
I also agree on Silversun Pickups.

Yeah, I really liked their sound. Their songs weren't great lyrically, but I figured they would learn to write better or do someone else's songs.
That's how it goes sometimes though, a little bit of success is all some people can handle.
