they had 2 albums and PTT has

Graveflower
Locust Spawning
New Death Sensation
Venus Blue
New Corpse
Dead Girl

So, your judgement is poor.

The first album is usually a band putting forward all the best stuff they already have.

Not always the same as "best".

I think VS is better than Ten.

I think that No Code is their best and has to be one of the most underrated rock albums of all time.

What if you have 20+ legit songs and the record company doesn't want to put out a double album as your debut?

but more polished and refined in the studio

I think this is why I like the first better. It’s more of a raw blues/rock album, which I love.

beastie boys

I'll preface this by saying I was lucky enough to see the beastie boy's 3-4 times before MCA passed. In fact and a southern boy, I was able to see them in Greensboro, NC BEFORE License to Ill even dropped. They only had 2 hip hop songs at the time, Slow and Low and Hold it now hit it. I owned the Original Cookie Puss EP on cassette.

Personally, I think that despite it's commercial popularity, that musically, License to Ill is their worst album. The rhymes are simple and sophomoric and the music isn't that complex. Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head are much better albums as a whole. People like to pump up License to ill because of the party anthem fight for your right, but its one of my least favorite songs of theirs. That song doesn't hold a candle to Looking down the barrel of a gun, So what cha want or Jimmy James...

I think it is b/c of the Rick Rubin sound to License.

I don’t care so much any more how “complex” music is in regards to whether or not I enjoy it. Some of the best music I’ve heard was incredibly simple.

License to Ill is great IMO. It’s not super clever or anything, but the songs are fun and timeless. Though I am not a big fan of Fight for your Right, like others have said.

I like most of their other stuff but I can’t ever understand the fascination with Paul’s Boutique. I’ve tried really hard to like it but it is always a chore to listen to outside of a couple songs.

Great album. Perfectly reasonable choice, but give me Pinkerton. I realize I’m probably in the minority with that opinion.
