In my late 20s, and as of late all I can seem to listen to is Jazz playlists on Spotify. It really is so relaxing and interesting at the same time. My wife keeps laughing at me saying I’m turning into an old man. But it just seems leaps and bounds better than the shite on the radio today.

I get Jazz for most is just elevator music, but the thought of being in a dark jazz bar sipping a drink listening to a jazz band do their thing seems cool as shite. Unfortunately in BR we don’t really have that here.

Jazz is one of the great American-original artforms. I assume anyone who doesn't like Jazz is either pitifully ignorant or painfully stupid.

Late night jazz playlist on Spotify is really good.

The Marcin Wasileski Trio version of "Diamonds and Pearls" is incredible

I bought Mile Davis’ Kind of Blue in a $5.99 bin at a CD store when I was 17 years old (1991) and it changed my life

Harold Mabern came up on my playlist while I was driving this morning. Check him out. So good.

I started getting into jazz around 1980 while in my early 20s and it’s still my favorite genre. Love Miles Davis, Coltrane and Jobim. Many of my favorite mainstream bands and artists are jazz influenced. Steely Dan, Chicago and Stevie Wonder to name a few.
Jazz is a very important and influential musical genre and just plain great to listen to.

My favorites in Jazz tend to have some kind of connection to Bossa Nova: Tom Jobim, Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Walter Wanderley, Toots Theilemans, Elis Regina, etc.

But there is a ton of Jazz out there that I haven't gotten around to yet.

from Duane Allman's Wikipedia page - Allman was well known for his melodic, extended and attention-holding guitar solos. During this period two of his stated influences were Miles Davis and John Coltrane. He said that he had listened intently to Davis's Kind of Blue for two years

My 2 main listening genres are jazz and metal. Both are outside of the commercial realm and feature musicians playing their asses off. I got hooked on jazz at Baton Rouge High in the late 70s by hearing the jazz ensemble play when I was a freshman, and the live sound just grabbed me. Musically, it's just more interesting, and the improv aspect makes the live performance more unique. Jazz to me isn't really a "mood" music, it's an adventure and a musical conversation between the players at its best.

Big fan of Mingus, Miles, Monk, Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, etc. I also like some avant garde stuff which is decidedly NOT elevator music in any way shape or form. Coltrane's last couple of years moved strongly that way and he lost a lot of fans. Albert Ayler "Love Cry" on Impulse is a great intro to him - shorter versions of tunes that are more digestible.

Big fan too of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messgengers. The group started with pianist Horace Silver and those two are basically the "high priests" of the hard bop style. Blakey & Silver both have a long list of great records.

Joe Henderson made several great records in the 60s for Blue Note. Almost anything from the mid 50s through late 60s on Blue Note is great.

Mel Torme was exceedingly talented. I've been listening to Peterson, Baker, Coltrane, etc. for years. Doesn't make you an old man, just a better judge of music.

Love them, John Lurie is great. There was a whole scene with some of those folks in different bands. The Jazz Passengers is one I also like.

LOVE the Masada stuff, absolutely amazing. If you dig that, have you heard the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars or Hasidic New Wave? Really fun - I like stuff that mixes some "out" with traditional "in".

Zorn is so hard to pin down though, such a bewildering breadth of styles.
