The Brits win in a mismatch of epic proportion

UK is about a fifth the size of the U.S., population wise.
Nirvana is a great band, but if you want longevity you can go with Pearl Jam.
If I had to throw out some top American bands I'd go with:
Elvis
Beach Boys
Bob Dylan
Allman Brothers
Jimi Hendricks
Joni Mitchell
CCR
RHCP
Jack White
I think Elvis, Dylan and Beach Boys (which you whiffed on all three somehow) match up nicely with the Beatles, Stones and Zeppelin. Still doesn't explain the per capita thing though. You got me.

But per capita it's not even close. What is the UK maybe 1/10th the size of America?

One fifth. Not one tenth.

Britain had a great run from 1960-1980 but the well has mostly run dry. USA has beaten them since then. Most of the top 10 greatest bands of all time are British that's true.

The US has better artists, the UK has better bands.
Kind of a culture thing. American being more independent while British being more corporate.
That said, I enjoy all music (except for rap/hip-hop/r&b) and I couldn’t give a rat’s arse where the people playing were from.
I will however give a sizzling take right now and say that any Jimi Hendrix song would be just a little better as a Stevie Ray Vaughan song.

I would say the mismatch is because the Us had more genre oriented radio stations. If you consider the Beatles as a rock band you should also consider Michael Jackson as rock. Both are pop. Beach boys are close to the Beatles but that's surf. Hell Alabama and Garth Brooks are closer to pop than they are country.

Pearl Jam and Nirvana should be on the American list

What's more amazing to me is that The Yardbirds had Clapton, Page, and Beck
Dwayne Allman, Dave Mason, George Harrison and Clapton were all members, at one time or another in Derek and The Dominos.

Actors and writers too. They place a higher value on the arts and language and they often pursue the arts at an early age and attend a music or drama school instead of general higher education.

Yeah.
Also the Brits produces a lot of actors. Maybe they’re just artsy fartsy like that.

Everyone on TV, in movies, or in music is from the U.K. lately.

I could list a long list of delta blues, hill country blues, Carolina blues and jazz musicians from the states to counter the OP's statement. Then l could start on country, r&b, and funk before starting on the american acts of the last 40 years.
Hell, I'll put the bands fronted by or recordings of Clarence Gatemouth Brown, James Brown, Albert King, Freddie King, BB King, Furry Lewis, Robert Johnson, Bob Wills, Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimi Hendrix, J. J. Cale, Warren Zevon, the Ramones, the Meters and Little Feat out there as an example. Then you can start on jazz and the popular bands, from the 60's forward, including rap.
Fairly obvious that Britain has some heavy weights, but their output is not equivalent to the creativity found in the states.
Edit - obviously not entirely on point with rock bands, but it all ties together.
