America split into 3 different groups, blues, rock and country. Collectively they were just as great as the British rock bands.

Also three of our biggest rock stars/bands died at an early age.

I think the British bands in the 60s were quicker than white Americans to embrace and adapt blues and other music created by black Americans.

I think it has a lot to do with what their record labels and promoters look for relative to ours. They cultivate talent, we manufacture “talent”. America is all about finding a certain “look”, the Brits were willing to market ugly dudes who made awesome music, even if it didn’t fit the mainstream mold.

The U.S. had some great bands during the grunge era; owned soul, funk, and jazz fusion; but classic rock acts are a little lacking, relatively speaking.

Jimi Hendrix
Chicago
Boston
Kiss
Janis Joplin
Jefferson Airplane
Journey
Black Crowes
Black Flag
Allman Brothers
Skynyrd
Aerosmith
Metallica
Cheap Trick
Pantera
CCR
The Doors
Guns n Roses
Ted Nugent
Stevie Ray Vaughn

England was just way better at heavier rock (Led Zeppelin, The Who, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath); Canada had Rush; Ireland gave us Thin Lizzy and Van Morrison; and Australia produced AC/DC and Jet.

We all can try to be pro American all we want, but it is a fact that the UK has put out a tremendous amount of good music over the decades.
Maybe it is all what you said in the OP.
I'd also like to include that I think a lot of young rockers got their starts with music and theater lessons, which we don't really have here as much. Whereas, I think British culture looks more highly on young kids wanting to learn the arts, here in America, it is looked upon less favorably, maybe even "effeminate".

The Beach Boys are the quintessential American band and the only one who really withstood the British Invasion and became even more popular. They also drove the Beatles to create their best work.

Def Leppard should be on this list, maybe at the top.

Also, Mike Love is probably rock's biggest a-hole. That has to count for something.

I always felt the US produced more individual stars than Britain..... Elvis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix, Ray Charles Springsteen, Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Stevie Ray.....

But per capita it's not even close. What is the UK.... like a tenth the size of the USA?

And a lot of you guys are naming great bands -- no doubt -- but many of them have maybe a couple of years of greatness, and maybe one or two albums? Nirvana??? Bitch, please.
