40 Years Ago Tonight We Lost A Beatle

40 years ago tonight John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman. I was laid up in bed with the worst case of mono in the history of western civilization, and MNF was one of the few things I had to look forward to in those four very long months. This is how I found out about my biggest musical hero's demise:
HC - MNF

I wasn't born until 87 but it gives me an idea of how big Lennon truly was when his death is announced during a football game.
Of course he had just burst back onto the scene with a new record just a few weeks prior IIRC.

He had also visited Howard in the booth 6 years previous.

yeah it sucked.
i was in my room listening to the radio...
i had just bought a copy of double fantasy earlier that week or so. what his murder meant to kids our age and older is (besides the senseless tragedy and horrifying circumstances) is that after 12/8/80, the beatles were never going to ever play together again.

I was 11, and didn't fully appreciate the significance of the Beatles. I remember my oldest brother was 17, and was devistated.

They wouldn't do that now-a-days, but they do talk nonstop about how black criminals are heroes.

Double Fantasy is a good album. It was good to see John get back on track after a semi-retirement and some crappy work before that.
Beautiful Boy is hard to listen to when you think about John getting killed right after and not being able to watch his son grow up which is what the whole song is about.

Arguably the greatest songwriter of all time.
Love The Beatles.
RIP.

Wow, 40 years. I was very young and when it happened I barely knew who he was. I was really only familiar with Paul McCartney at that age. I vaguely knew there was another guy named Ringo. I thought John Lennon was just a lesser player in the band.
Sucks to think about how much great potential music we've been robbed of over the past four decades.

I was 13 at the time and watching The Tonight Show on NBC when they interrupted Carson to break the news.

I was 7. My Dad watching MNF.
Mom and dad weren’t Beatles fans, but it was still a depressing gut punch to them. Somber night.
I remember my Mom having the 45 of the song “Woman” at the time. It was getting airplay and my mom liked the song.

Never liked him. Someone in my dorm liked him alot so I smoked cigarette, put the ashes in a plastic bag with a note taped to it that said “John Lennon”. He did not appreciate.

I was 14 at the time so too young to actually remember the Beatles when they were together but thanks to my older brother they were far and away my favorite band. I also heard it from Howard Cosell. Sitting in the den watching MNF with my dad. He didn’t care much about the Beatles but he knew how much I loved them. I remember my jaw dropping and my dad kind of looking at me like he knew it was gonna hit me hard.
I just got up, went to my room and turned on the radio and of course WLCS was all Beatles and Lennon’s solo music. In My Life and Imagine hit me hard that night. I was crushed. Cried myself to sleep.

Good musician, but a shitty person

Seems no doubt had he lived he would’ve been a dirty Socialist.
As I got older and really paid attention to the lyrics, the aforementioned song Imagine did not resonate with me nearly the way it did before. Still like the tune. The lyrics are just child-like and naive.

John would be unbearable in today’s culture if he was still alive.

He was also a giant hypocrite
