Note: The original one (2003), not the 2021 remake (which was terrible).

I mean nothing now messes me up for more than a few minutes but as a kid

poltergeist (which is funny now after rewatching it)
The Ring (man that messed me up for a few days)
Freddy (all of them, made me not want to sleep)

that was it, but I didnt watch a ton of scary movies a kid. I try to stay away from demonic things like the Omen, or the exorcist because that stuff imo is real. Idk if watching real things can manifest it,but I don't tempt it

I'm sure that any of the animal slaughter horror nasties would be prime candidates, but I've purposely avoided watching them. So in no particular order:

1. The Exorcist - If there's another horror film that better conveys what evil must feel like, I haven't experienced it.

2. Day of the Dead - The least of the original trilogy but also the blackest. There's a heavy pessimism that pervades the entire movie, right from the beginning; in fact, the story begins with pretty well the entire world hopelessly overrun.

3. Evil Dead - Though it has its share of silly moments, it also contains some of the most terrifying sequences in horror.

4. The Gates of Hell / City of the Living Dead - The only horror movie I can recall to actually make me feel physically ill.

5. Hereditary - There's such a feeling of true grief throughout the film that I wondered at one point whether I wanted to continue putting myself through it.

Hostel for me. not even sure why but, i never finished it.

This was disturbing for me too (saw it in the theatre with my dad for some reason), but it wasn’t because of anything on-screen. Gore porn has never done anything for me—I think I’ve seen 1 Saw movie (again, weirdly with my dad at the theater—neither one of us are into those).

It was because I realized that that shite may actually go down in real life. Honestly, with all the human trafficking that goes on, I’m quite sure it does. That’s pretty terrifying as a father myself. Or just a human being.

Exorcism of Emily Rose is a contender for me.

I’m not a horror movie buff, but they usually don’t bother me. That one, predictable as it was, just did it.

I was unaware of how fricked up it was and watched it alone, at night, on a wall projector in my house lmfao. It really turns dark pretty quick

Didn’t see Requiem for a Dream listed. Guess it doesn’t qualify as horror, but it’s pretty messed up.

Seven is another one that is pretty disturbing.

Although I generally disagree with most of you troglodytes here but I do appreciate your collective movie acumen. But for the knuckle-dragger who recommended "Martyrs" I want to fight you at Sonic. I now require therapy. Thanks I am officially scarred for life. DISTURBING!!!!!!

I'm a huge horror fan. Ill throw my hat into the ring:

The Pact (2012) I find this one to be overlooked. It toes the line between natural and supernatural very well, IMO.

The Ring (2002) This is a well put together story that leans on the "creepy children" trope at times. The opening scene is fricking scary to me. The payoff at the end is also quite nice.

The Strangers (2008) This movie isn't perfect, but it uses the setting very well. The cinematographer uses the desolate, big house like a third main character. It does well using a crumbling romance to both distract you and make you pull for the troubled couple.

I could go on forever, but I'll stop andet others chime in.

And it could really happen to you.

One that I haven’t seen mentioned is The House that Jack Built. If one scene was a second longer before cutting away, I would have had to turn it off.

As someone who travels solo all over the world, I keep this movie in mind sometimes when venturing out. I try to make sure I’m never vulnerable.
