When Maximus refuses to and then takes off his mask when ordered and his speech after unmasking in the Coliseum

I know that speech by heart and say it every time it comes in tv. My family hates when I do that.

I don’t know what my favorite is but I remember being spellbound by the tiger fight scene. That shite caught me way off guard.

"At my signal, unleash Hell!"

One of the best opening scenes ever.

It’s the confrontation with commodus and the reveal that he is not dead .

The music. The crowd. Russell Crowe with a menacing look. The speech.

As good as movies get to me .

Is there really any other legitimate answer other than this?

"Am I Not Merciful?" is even better when you realize it wasn't scripted and when he yelled at Connie, she was legit scared because it was all Joaquin. Brilliant

I remember going to the theater to watch this. Had not even seen a trailer and was blown away. Top 5 theater experience.

I loved the "Are you not entertained" thing, but it really didn't make sense without the preceding scene that was deleted.

For those that haven't seent it (it was added back into the extended version): Proximo speaks to Maximus before that fight and tells him that he's killing people too fast, and that he needs to slow things down or the crowd will get bored. He comes out and kills ~5 people fast as frick.

So much shite went on during the filming.

Oliver Reed drank himself to death after trying to out drink some sailors one night.

Russell Crowe was almost mauled by one of the tigers and broke his foot and separated his shoulder.

Lots of rewrites and disagreements between Ridley Scott and Crowe along actors who didn't get along with Crowe..

My favorite scene is the Colosseum fight with Tigris of Gaul, with the Tigers in the arena.

I don't even know if it's true but supposedly Crowe hated the "I will have my vengeance" line but he said I'm the best actor alive and I'll make it work. He seems like a complete a-hole but he delivers as well as any actor I've ever seen

Are you not entertained..or the first time he encounters Commodus in the Colosseum.

But one of my favorite exchanges is when Maximus & Marcus are discussing bringing Rome back from the dark

quote:

Yet you have never been there. You have not seen what it has become. I am dying, Maximus. When a man sees his end... he wants to know there was some purpose to his life. How will the world speak my name in years to come? Will I be known as the philosopher? The warrior? The tyrant...? Or will I be the emperor who gave Rome back her true self? There was once a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish... it was so fragile. And I fear that it will not survive the winter.

The first coliseum fight when Maximus jumps on the horse and says “Single column! Single column!” The way that scene was done in sequence with the score gives me chills every time.
