They never touched race much but there was the episode where Peggy was going out every night dancing with a gay man and the gay mans husband ended up cooking for Al. He even still served Al using bucks dog dish
Probably the second best episode. Best was the Godfather episode.

Al Bundy, Shoe Dick is my favorite

In this episode, Al leads a different life as a detective who's being framed for the murder of a rich woman's father. By solving the case, he earns $50,000. He wakes up and realizes that it was a dream. He also realizes that his wife and Marcy's pregnancies were also just dreams.

They are tough. They can handle it.
And they really didn't get along all that well on the set.

One, two, three, four, you’re going to fall through the floor.

Lol, Married with Children would last 2 episodes before the cancels got to it.

They tried to cancel it when it first came out and the attention actually boosted viewership
How an activist named Terry Rakolta tried—and failed—to convince Middle America to stop watching “Married … With Children.” She might have saved Fox.

Incredible how the world has changed since this show was on the air.
If you are remembering Al Bundy as the relatable, "stand-in for the audience" protagonist of that show, then you are misremembering that show. He was meant to be a ridiculous id who would do, say, and think things you never would. A caricature. A funny, pretty well written (at times) caricature.

I don't think Al was ever meant to be a "stand-in for the audience", but i think you're selling his character a bit short also. He was a caricature, but of the guy everybody knows who peaked in high school. No one on that show was meant as an audience stand in. They were all irredeemable in their own way.
His relatability is 100% tied to him saying and at times doing things people wish they could.

Racist? Nah
Sexist?
Oh yea
I don't know, he could oddly get a pass.
He wasn't racist and hated women because of Peggy ruining his life.
Like an extreme version of Ray Romano...who complains about his wife all the time. And his wife who bitches about him all the time.
Since Peggy could certainly dish it out tenfold to Al, he probably gets a pass...
Because lets face it, Al was a punching bag more often than not by women on that show. Only Marcy couldn't give as good as she took.

Ed O'Neil and Amanda bearse didn't like each other in real life.
“I remember one instance where she was getting married to the more female... a lovely girl by the way, and the invitations went out and I didn't get one, and neither did David Faustino.
“[She said] ’This was a very tough call, but I just feel that you would find it amusing that me and Becky would come in tuxedos in a church and walk down the aisle, and you and David would be snickering and finding it funny.’ I said, ‘Amanda, what is funny about two women in tuxedos, walking down to church?’ I started laughing and she said, ‘See!’ And I said, ‘Well, you know why? Because it is fricking funny and I'm not going to be the only one that doesn't think so.’ But it was funny. She had a little white tux and, to me, it was funny. But in other words, she may not have been wrong in excluding me.
“Another time we got in a big fight over something stupid in the makeup room. And she said something about you're a bully or something, and I said, ‘Well, you're miserable.’ It was just bad... In front of everybody, by the way. And then I said, ‘You're not very bright, is your problem.’ And she was bright, but in a way she wasn't because I said look... She said, ‘I’m not bright?’ And I could just see her gearing up, like ‘I’m smarter than you.’
“And I said ‘No, because I'll tell you why. I have a button I could push. That button says ‘Get rid of Amanda Bearse.’ You don't have a button that says get rid of it Ed O'Neill. Your button doesn't work. Mine works.’ Now, this was a mean thing to say: I never was going to push that button, but it was true. I could go to them and say ‘I can't work with her. I go or she does.’ Who goes? So that was kind of bad.”

M...WC is one of the most underrated shows ever. It's insanely funny, and even holds up really well today. Sure, most of the jokes and dialogue wouldn't fly if they were made today, but that's because the world is pussified now. But man, I catch it in reruns on WGN every now and then and it cracks me up constantly.
I also think most people nowadays don't realize that this show made Fox as a legit network, and that it ran for 11 seasons. That's a crazy good run for a sitcom.

I just feel like it was too "poor black stereotype" for 2021. Liberal white people would get offended by it.
How was The Jefferson's too "poor black stereotype?" George Jefferson owned seven dry cleaning stores and was a multi-millionaire. If you had said Good Times, you might have a point. Not The Jefferson's.

pretty much called Marcy a lesbian every episode.
