With GoT winding down, pick a source work that you'd like to see get the HBO treatment.

Doesn't really have to be HBO even - it could be any of the services that do "original content" as long as they did it well.

It can be something kind of obvious or something off the wall that you think could turn out great.

I would kind of like to see some really good show runners with a decent budget take a crack at The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books. The movie they did awhile back wasn't bad, but I think a well done series could potentially be great.

Wouldn't mind seeing what they could do with Harry Potter. The movies really lost a grip on the source material towards the end but I understand that there just isn't enough time in movie to do everything justice. More time with each novel could yield something really special IMO

Was picked up by Amazon if I’m not mistaken.

For the longest time I wanted to see HBO do a Devil in the White City miniseries. Apparently Hulu has picked it up with DiCaprio and Scorsese.

I’d like to see HBO take a shot at a Pride and Prejudice series.

Hmmm. Wish it had been Netflix if not HBO, but it has to be done in serial form to be legit in any way.

Definitely can see some potential in something like this. But even though they would be two different formats, they might feel like the Ken Burns' documentary is hard to eclipse.

The Red Rising series would be amazing as a big budget show.

Also if we're picking something similar to Game of Thrones in the "the show is going to pass up the books" sense then the Kingkiller Chronicles would be great, but that's already in the works by someone, I believe.

This. I loved the series but it would have to be a show. It would never work as a Hunger Games-like movie series.

They couldn’t do the Civil War justice in the current political times IMO.

They aren’t well known now, but Kenneth Roberts wrote some amazing fiction related to the Revolutionary War, I think they would make for outstanding TV.

Amazon is making a Wheel of Time series.

quote:

The Wheel of Time is notable for its length, detailed imaginary world, well-developed magic system, and large cast of characters. The eighth through fourteenth books each reached number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. After its completion, the series was nominated for a Hugo Award.[4] According to Jordan's French publisher, as of 2017, the series has sold over 80 million copies worldwide, and is the best selling epic fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings.[5] Its popularity has spawned an eponymous video game, roleplaying game, and soundtrack album. On April 20, 2017, it was announced that Sony Pictures will adapt the series for television and on October 2, 2018, Amazon ordered the series with Sony as a co-producer.

quote:

At the time, Amazon’s mandate was essentially to find its own version of Game of Thrones — a sprawling, bingeable, marketable fantasy series that would drag in viewers. Amazon’s announcement is especially timely, given that HBO’s show is closing out its story next year, and while the network is lining up its own spinoffs and replacements, it’s offered scant details about what they might be about, or when they will actually air. Clearly, Amazon is hoping that with its epic world and characters, it’ll have a show that will draw viewers to its Prime subscription service, especially as other streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Apple, and Disney are pouring money into their own original content efforts.

If done right it could go for 10 seasons.

Mortal Kombat (Warner has owned the property since Midway Games went under)

It could be Netherrealm Studios first major production.

All they would have to do to tease it would be to have a black screen, then a series of thunder cracks, revealing the dragon logo. It would then say...Kombat begins 2020.

You could do an entire season just on Outworld and Shao Kahn's rise to power and how it affects early Earth history (as an example, one of the characters introduced in Mortal Kombat X was worshipped by the Mayans as Buluc, their War God)

James Clavell's Asian saga as a mini series (1 season = 1 book) starting with Shogun, then Tai Pan (already a movie)
