Well he never spoke like a street kid from 2023 and he wasn’t some immature dipshit. Dude was polished and camera ready in college. Why do you think he bashed the series, they’ve made him look ignorant and uneducated.

Damn I didn’t know that about Larry quitting Indiana and his dad committing suicide

It’s a very niche topic for this show but I was hoping they were going to show Kent Benson bullying freshman Larry Bird at IU and how Bird fricking hated him and played some of his best games against Benson’s teams in the NBA.

Could be useful to show Magic and Bird was a competitive rivalry based on elite athletes but mutual respect, whereas Bird had no respect for Benson

Lot of tension brewing this past episode. Brody is really stealing the show for me this season. He's killing it.

Finally gave in and re-upped Max just for Winning Time Season 2.

Binge watch holiday day, only through the first two episodes but man...I'm sure Magic ain't happy about this season.

Also, so far the new episodes are all over the place.

Still love how they film it. Nailed the retro look and feel.

Brody blew the doors off of it this week. One of those episodes you'd wish would've gone on for three hours.

I was interested to see their take on the Westhead sacking and Pat Riley rise. I like how they said, "yep, this really happened" in the presser when Buss announced West as offensive coach and Riley as coach.

Jerry West is the offensive coach

You can just watch that video and think, "Yeah, this management team would make for a great movie or series."

So did magic really request a trade back then? I know westheads firing has always been blamed on him even after Buss went on record that he had decided to fire him before magic even came to him

It sounds like Jerry West's reluctance to Coach again made Pat Riley's career (along with Magic of course).

But West seems the God in the Buss camp apart from Buss. He could've made or broke Riley on ego alone and he made him.

Agreed, those are the only bad scenes imo.

Magic did really request a trade and is blamed as the guy behind the Westhead firing.

I’ve said from the start, they’ve gotten the Lakers players generally right. The only thing that’s been overdone is West’s temper in the first 4 episodes of season 1.

Yes he did request a trade publicly like in the show. That was after he had already demanded Buss fire Westhead behind closed doors.

So Buss could say he had already decided to fire him all he wanted but the fact of the matter is he fired PW b/c Magic was mad about how Westhead was running the offense.

As for the episode itself, this one was really hurt by the truncated season as once Riley becomes HC they make it seem as if all it took to get them going was for Riley to yell at everyone once. That plus a short montage of them rolling to the finals was very disappointing. It's too bad b/c Brody was great in parts they actually gave him to be in and I'm sure he could have made the way the season went under him interesting to watch.

As for that $25 mil for 25 years Magic contract.

Kareem alleges that Buss knew it wasn't a good deal and implies that it was used to sink his teeth into Magic's entire career while underpaying him significantly as NBA salaries would increase drastically throughout the 80s and beyond.

quote:

The real Magic would eventually realize he was underpaid after his fourth NBA title in 1987. According to the Los Angeles Times, Buss ultimately would give Magic a one-year, $14 million deal in 1992 as reimbursement for being underpaid.

But...

When Michael Jordan was drafted in 1984, he signed a five year guaranteed contract with the Bulls for $6 million. He also received a $1 million signing bonus. So almost a million and a half a year until 1990. So a little more than Magic even though Magic was more valuable at the time.

Magic's contract was worth $1 million per year and lasted until 2009.

Johnson played only eight seasons after signing the contract.

And yet got paid the 80s standard mill for superstars for doing nothing for most of the 90s and nothing beyond.

He didn't last to hit the late 90s stupid contracts but still got paid the superstar average salary of the 80s...and got it for 17 years after he retired?

Am I missing something here how it was a terrible deal?
