Damn that’s disappointing

Can't think of another show of this high level that intentionally ended on such a horribly unfinished note.

That was really weird.

If my only knowledge of the showtime Lakers was this show, the Lakers could never really get over the hump after a couple of flash in the pan championships, and I guess Magic just played for another 20 years with no issues.

The first scene of the show was Magic finding out he had HIV

It’s pretty clear the creators intended it to go on for more than two seasons

Yeah they definitely wanted 2-3 more seasons

1. Lakers come back and best Boston
2. Team coasts and has a bad year after beating Boston
3. Lakers come back after a down year and beat Boston back to back years
4. Pistons become the team that knocks off Boston and LA
5. Rise of Jordan
6. Magic gets HIV
7. He plays in Barcelona and is alive 30 years later (this could have been done in a 2-3 minute highlight package).

I think 1 could have been its own 5-6 episode season.

2 and 3 become its own season, another 5-6 episodes.

4-6 becomes a 7-8 episode season.

This is a very disappointing decision.

They did not beat Boston 2 years in a row after losing to the Rockets in 86 (and avoiding losing to Boston in the Finals to make it 2-2) they bounced back to beat Boston in 87 but in 88…..

88 the Lakers beat Detroit then lost to them in 89

My mistake on 1988 being Pistons, not Celtics. But they had two straight finals wins after the 86 season.

They lost to Boston in 1984 (series ending).

Then came back and beat Boston in 1985.
They lost in 86 without making the finals.

Then they won in 87 and 88.

Then they got swept by the Pistons in 89.

No finals in 1990 as Portland was the rising team, then it all ended in 1991, with Jordan’s first ring, and if I remember correctly, Magic tested positive for HIV in the 1991 preseason.

I think he was an honorary all star that year though and played in the All Star Game

Alan Sepinwell’s column says they filmed a second ending to the season back in January and sent both versions to HBO. The other ending is just Magic being deflated after the Game 7 loss, which would be a logical ending to Season 2 of 5.

So the creators definitely knew the show could be done 4 months before the strike.

The Gemstones finale was a classic series finale as well, and I’m really surprised that both Danny McBride and Adam McKay were told they were on the chopping block.

ETA: Gemstones was renewed for season 4 but the late announcement and the ending to season 3 makes it seem like the show could have ended this summer.

I will say they wrapped it up nicely so the series ending after 3 seasons wouldn’t have been as frustrating.

Plus it is clearly hard to balance everyone’s schedules because the Gemstones have a lot of big names. Whereas Winning Time has Adrien Brody, John C Reilly, and a bunch of good actors playing basketball players who aren’t well known. And besides playing Kareem, I’m not sure what a talented 6’10” actor can get as a job.

Michael Chiklis is a big name too, but his stuff can be filmed in a week.

Man I’m just loving this Max takeover of HBO

ETA: Jason Clarke is a pretty big name too

Well that sucks that they're not even going to get to the Dynasty years...finally beating the Celtics and then winning back-to-back Titles in '87-'88.

Well at least it ends with showing what pieces of shite Boston fans were.

Rambis did punch a fan because he tried to tear oft Rambis' jersey and steal it...and then he sued Rambis.

And Boston fans did jump on Kareem's back and rip off his goggles. Stern didn't care. He loved it to make the NBA (a league few were watching) a WWF spectacle...

And the officiating was so biased and awful in 1984...When Kurt Rambis got clotheslined and tackled, that was just called a regular foul and not a flagrant. Times were different, as a kid...I thought the NBA was always going to be like that.

The show may have been called “Winning Time,” but it’s ending with a historic loss. HBO has confirmed to Variety that Sunday’s Season 2 finale is the last episode of the basketball series.

I feel like I watched Marvel Phase I all the way through Infinity War and then found out they weren’t making Endgame.

Such an extremely up and down show, so much wasted potential. Very good high points along with terrible low points and important things just totally left out. The player characterizations were awful, especially Magic and Bird but it had great performances from Brody, Reilly, Robinson and Clarke. McCay has a tendency to greatly exaggerate the true events he uses and for actual fans who experienced this era this is a huge turnoff. There’s a reason all the people it’s based on hate it and I’m sure it’s the reason the numbers never did what they were supposed to and dropped so much as the series progressed.

Correct. It’s a shame the series won’t get to the 85 finals when they win in Boston Garden. They were the first team besides the Celtics to win in the Gahden. I remember Kareem hit a hook shot with about a minute left in game 6 running down the court with his fists pumped.

Would have been a great scene with John C Reilly and Michael Chiklis

The game announcer says in Game 6, 1985, "the Lakers could win their 3rd title in 6 years...They have reached the Finals in 5 of those 6 years...not a Dynasty but its the closest since the Celtics won 11 of 13.".

Wow, high standards for what constituted a Dynasty back them.

Too bad the show didn't follow through and leaves with a humiliating loss before things get rolling...maybe that's why its called The Rise...well the rise needs AT Least to show them toppling the Celtics.

1985 beat Boston
1986 - no show
1987 - beat Boston
1988 - beat Detroit
1989 - lost to Detroit (Magic pulls hammy in Game 2, out for series)
1990 - no show
1991 - lost to the Bulls

Magic announces HIV
1992 Dream Team

From 1980-1991, the Lakers went to The Finals 9 times..Winning 5.

IRL walking off the court, Red Auerbach looked like someone just stole all his titles and his lunch money. Buss beaming and Auerbach humbled would have been an apropos ending.

Had no clue this was the series finale until the end. I am surprised as some of the acting was so damn good and the show kept you interested. Pretty funny it goes out with the Lakers loss

Paramount plus and showtime could pick it up. Would be the smart move. Hype it during the nba season. It would be a cult favorite at some point. I wouldn’t even say this is a show for lakers fans. As long as you like the NBA this is a must watch.

Philosophical idea I had while watching this season- If Buss doesn't side with Magic and can the coach would the current NBA be the player-driven place it is today?

I was only 6 at the time but vividly remember watching Lakers v. Celtics.

Late to this show and love it. Just finished season 1 and starting season 2. Read through this and bummed it wasn't picked up for a 3rd season.
