People that are bothered by cursing are way worse than people cursing too much. Now my a-hole has to pucker about you making a scene every time someone utters the wrong pattern of puffs of air from their mouth?

I'll never understand why some people have an issue with the arrangement of certain letters into "bad" words but are fine with the same thing being talked about when using another arrangement of letters which is considered "good."

Cock = bad. Penis = good. Literally the same organ.

fricking = bad. Having sex = good, unless your precious ears also get offended by hearing the word sex.

Which is worse... "Steve...you're best best fricking friend I've ever had! or "Steve, you're a dumb, smelly, untrustworthy loser and I hope you die." One has a "bad" word in it that would make it impossible to show on network TV. The other is a-ok.

At best, there are words which can be considered "adult" or maybe less appropriate for general audiences without first knowing who's listening. Not because of the word itself, but because of folks like the OP who will get offended.

You should write to him and ask him why he says, "JESUS frickING CHRIST!!!" about 40 times each podcast. I ask you to do that, because I'm quite interested in his response to that...

“Profanity reflects a lack of vocabulary”

Does it really? I've heard this all my life and have used it as a reason (appropriate or no?) when having discussions with my children on how to converse with others, both formally and informally, but in truth, is this really the case of just some tired old saw?

I agree that gratuitous use of profane speech does indeed generally reflect poorly on the speaker, but I'm not convinced that it is intellectually honest to use this reasoning. My feeling when thinking about the issue is that it is more a function of the general trend toward the lack of formality in speech in our time.

No. One of my favorite orators, Christopher Hitchens, cursed quite often. I'm fairly certain no one was accusing him of lacking in vocabulary.

No...it's just an attempt to guilt people into conformity by suggesting they are "lesser" because they are not conforming to whatever is considered the norm. It's about control.

What gets me is when a kid in a movie or show drops the f bomb at the dinner table, and either the mom or dad just yells “LANGUAGE!” And that’s the end of it.

My parents weren’t prudes but my 12 year old arse would have been best if I told my mom something was “bullshite” or my little brother to “frick off” at the table.

I had a friend who was Mormon back in the day and he and his family rented movies from a place called Clean Screen or something...

And the rental place edited out all the sex and cursing and violence in movies on their VHS tapes...

The movies he rented were about 45 minutes long.

Pulp Fiction must've been an incoherent mess.

Occasionally I'll stop and watch a movie I know is Rated R for language that is playing on some "family friendly" station only to see just how terribly they have to edit the movie in order to make it passable. At some point, why even bother?

It's like modern fig leaves...

must be for the O&G viewers

one of the things I always admired about Frazier, was that they never used profanity. It was a supremely well written series and relied on genuine humor and wit in lieu of "cheap or lazy" writing.

same for The Godfather. Great writing with very little profanity. Lots of violence, but polite language

Ratings, plain and simple.

Remember in the original Star Wars series, there was a severed limb shown in each film? That was done explicitly to avoid the G rating, which has a "kiddie show" stigma and would have been the kiss of death. Same thing happens with language, drop in enough cuss words it will bump the movie rating and add advisories at the beginning of the show.

Alternately, you can see some creative ways to avoid going too far in the ratings (before Deadpool, this again was the kiss of death); in John Carter, they made all the alien blood blue, and thus avoided the R rating.
I mean, if this were red blood instead, you think it stays under R?

Why are people so uptight about words. I remember getting trouble as like a 12 year old n church for asking why you could say fornicate but not frick. they mean the EXACT same thing.

You'll get downvotes but you'll never get a straight answer for this question.

One string of letters is bad, another string of letters is acceptable and both strings of letters mean the exact same thing.

Idiotic.

Well, another way of looking at it is that it's created a boring PG-13 category that while financially viable has been the kiss of death for nearly 2 decades for movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, 48 Hours, etc. Those movies earned their R ratings and the language used helped to make them what they were. Today? You'd almost certainly neuter all three of those franchises in favor of getting that PG-13 rating in hopes of getting kids into the theater as well.

Frankly, I'm thrilled that there are starting to be movies made for adults with language appropriate for the film, rather than Nerfing it down in order to get the broader audience.
