Wtf did I just watch?

For all of us saying “Hollywood has no new ideas and just regurgitates the same things over and over”….

Spend some time with White Noise.

Pointless? Maybe. Or, maybe not.

Was definitely entertaining though. And yet, it was so over the top in your face with its messaging.

Great acting. And, I kind of think there was some good dialogue mixed in there somewhere.

At the end though….

Good to know. Now I know what I'll read on my trip to India in a couple of weeks.

It was from a Don DeLilo novel. It's not supposed to make sense.

Interesting. I just assumed it was a remake of the shitty Michael Keaton horror movie. The book is a really fun satire, especially the main character who is the head of Hitler studies at a university. I would never have expected it to be made into a movie but will definitely check it out. DeLilo isn't an easy read but I really like his stuff.

It's based on a famous book. Not new idea at all. It's where Hollywood turns after they have exhausted "subverting expectations" (i.e. ruined) on current franchises. Original story now and again please. Barbarian is a good example. The director wrote the story and spent 4.5 making it with a 45M box office.

Care to elaborate on this?
Typical Netflix pandering?
I saw the trailer on Netflix and am thinking about watching this weekend. But I am tired of these production companies sliding their progressive shite into my entertainment.

It's a trip. You half expect it to be about one thing, then it turns and you think it's about something else and then you realize, no it's just about family, relationships and life in general. It's an awesome flick.

I had to stop after 20-30 minutes. It was just incessant dialogue from all characters non stop since the opening frame. I have nothing against high brow, intellectual comedy, but I felt assaulted by the relentless pace of the dialogue.

At first I thought that it was a metaphor for Covid and Covid deniers, but then I saw that it was based off a book

Couldn't agree more! I ended up watching and finishing it night before last, but after it was over my wife and I each got up from the living room and went to bed without saying a word. Just trying to absorb what I just spent two hours watching.

Last night as we were eating dinner I said to her, "boy what piece of shite movie that was last night", and she "yeah I know, right!" Just was not what we had expected.

We both watched the trailer and didn't realize how pretentious and over stylish this was going to be.

I read things like "It was from a Don DeLilo novel. It's not supposed to make sense" or "it's a Noah Baumback film and it's at his most Noah Baumback style", and I am like excuse the frick out of me for not knowing who either of these two guys are and that you are supposed to do research on source material and director before you watch something.

It's not like if I was sitting down watching a Terrence Malik movie and not expecting it to be arty, pompous nonsense with voice over and clips of dinosaurs thrown in...I know what I am getting into going in.

I gave up about 30 minutes in. I feel like there's a good movie in there somewhere, but it's like the dough became overmixed and flat. I'm sure I'll try to go back and watch it at some point.

As for recent, kind of pretentious character allegorical films, I preferred The Banshees of Inisherin.

Underworld by DeLillo is one of my favorite novels about Americana.

I’ve read White Noise and enjoyed it for its frenetic pace.

Nevertheless, I had to stop watching this movie after twenty or so minutes because I just couldn’t stand the anxiety that continued to build.

For that, it does follow the novel - frenetic and anxious pacing, essentially resulting in a mountain made from a mole hill.

I’ll have to try and rewatch another time.

Whitenoise is two hours of my life that I won't get back.
Some may like it, but my wife and I thought that it was not good.

I watched it last night, and enjoyed it. I didn't really think the messaging was that over the top.

It's just about family and dealing with Death. Everyone fears death, and just thinking that all we're doing is waiting for non-existence is terrifying.

All we can do is wait, and enjoy the company we have along the way.

No toilets in India. Just holes in the ground.
