I just watched it last night. Excellent movie. You describe it well
It was so intense, and the ending was beautiful/perfect.
Easily one of my favorites this year. I hope it takes home some Oscars.
O and that was really Teller playing the drums. Edited together through multiple shoots, but impressive none the less. It was actually one of the guys that he competes with for core in the movie who gave him lessons. He had played drums in a rock band as a teenager too.
I'm surprised he isn't getting more recognization.

it's one of those movies where when you try to explain what it's about, it sounds so "meh"
omg you have to watch this drama about drumming in a jazz studio. yawwwn
you have to basically trust the critics and the word of mouth

Whiplash and The Imitation Game are my two favorites of the year. Nightcrawler is probably third.

I really enjoyed it. Primarily for the performances by Simmons and Teller.
For various reasons, I would place Imitation Game, Boyhood, Birdman and Grand Budapest slightly ahead of it. That's not bad, though. I see a lot of movies.

Technically perfect, suspenseful and hilarious, but not emotionally or intellectually complex enough for me to give it a perfect 10.
Still, it probably deserves best picture.

Just finished Whiplash. Thoroughly enjoyable!
I'm a little surprised they let JK's character get away with so much homophobic put-downs and still have some level of validation to his methods.
They both had amazing performances, but I thought the kid was phenomenal.

Up vote.
Whiplash is almost the perfect movie. Top five for me in the last several years.

Just got back from it. I agree with all the praise. The who movie was intense, but that final performance, from the second Fletcher said, "I know it was you" to the end credits, was intense on so many different emotional levels.

I truly hated it.
Of course, I had a psychopath for a band director in high school who killed my love for music, so I spent much of the movie imagining myself as the kids dad, beating jk simmons to death.
i might be juuuuuuust a bit biased on this one.
True story, he ended up getting fired a year after i quit for sending sexually suggestive text messages to a student.
best.
day.
ever.

Just watched this film on a long flight...
And it made the flight incredibly short. What astonishing film. And I say that for a few reasons:
1. Simmons, while the performance was awesome, it's the character that stands out. I'm not sure Fletcher was all bad, I just can't be. I can't even think his reveal at the end was genuine or just another manipulation tool.
2. The moral gray. Fletcher is guilty of doing what he did. But in another way so is Andrew. See the legal consult scene for more clues. He knows what Fletcher does is borderline wrong, but he understands why, he just can't verbalize it.
3. The ending. Few movies have ended on a better note (pun intended). The smirks, the look of approval, the joyful winning....or tragic giving in. Even Paul Reiser, in that moment, just completely expresses the core idea of the film: At what cost is greatness? Is he horrified because his son is giving in to Fletcher? Or is he in awe because his son is so talented? I have no idea, and that's awesome.
4. Editing and Cinematography - Really well done here. Lots of unique cuts for a film like this. It's a weird amalgamation of a sports film, thriller, and indie drama. Just great stuff.
Might be my #1 of the year, although I haven't seen Birdman yet.

Whiplash was great but I enjoyed Foxcatcher better

Might be my #1 of the year,
I think it was the most enjoyable for me, but it mostly formulaic. Drill sergeant teacher meets prodigy.
That was my complaint with most of the movies this year. Most were enjoyable, but few had any complexity.
I thought Foxcatcher was the most complex, but it wasn't enjoyable.

Agreed, best movie of the year. Didn't think Teller deserved a nomination, but Simmons absolutely deserved his win

Agreed. Just watched it and I think it's my favorite non popcorn flick since Slumdog.

Good movie. Simmons was great. The rest of the cast ok, but the tea he was great.

Watched it last night. It was very good but after seeing both films, Edward Norton should have won supporting actor IMO.

Can't wait to watch this. I've been on the Birdman train since opening day, but I knew I had to see this too.
