Which of these 70s "ethnic" shows holds up best over time?

In your opinion, of course?
Good Times
Sanford and Son
The Jeffersons
I used to watch each of these in syndication and liked them all when I was younger.
For me, I'd say:
1) Sanford and Son
2) The Jeffersons
distant 3) Good Times - it's very difficult for me to watch now.

You'd be correct. Well done.

Technically, Barney Miller was an ethnic show (with the black guy and the Puerto Rican and the Chinese guy and the Jews...). :)
It was better than any of those shows.

Sanford and Son was a funny show about a father and son.
The others were about sassy black people as seen through the eyes of old white liberals.

Jeffersons and Sanford & Son by a mile. Never liked Good Times.

The Jeffersons.
I'm horribly biased, though.

You can probably relate to the Jeffersons' story pretty well, having worked hard to experience the success of moving from Bryan to College Station.

Although race is an integral tool used by the show, it, in and of itself is not necessary for the show to be funny. Foxx was funny. Winston was a very effective, likeable, "everyman," straight man. Page was a wonderful comedienne in her own right and helped take the comedy load off of Foxx. The supporting cast was excellent - one of the best of the decade - for a comedy, Sanford was right up there with All in The Family, SOAP, M*A*S*H, WKRP, Barney Miller - just a number of programs that had excellent large casts.

Ended up going in a slightly different direction than the "black" All in the Family of its roots (pardon the pun). There was an urge in the entertainment industry to portray a positive, upper middle class black family (almost a preview of the Cosby Show) - but, it was tough to make it respectable and funny. George had elements of Amos and Andy, as well as Archie Bunker in him (lot of "A"s there), but the acting and chemistry amongst the principals were excellent. They kept the cast a little more compact, but the show was able to do sociological exposition without losing its ability to be funny.

And honestly, I haven't watched Good Times in years - I can imagine it hasn't aged well. The support cast was better than the principal cast (other than Amos) and that is usually a red flag. Once they killed off Amos' character, the show became more about the preachy messages (like the last few years of M*A*S*H), and less about the jokes. The continued reliance of Kid Dy-no-Mite for all the comedy as the show wore on, forced them to try more and more gimmicks. I think it was an important show and the first 3 seasons were pretty good. However, that show jumped the shark as soon as they lost John Amos.

I can see this - almost the prototype of perfect diversity - no women, though they tried a couple of times.

Good Times had the best cast. Sanford and Son was the funniest. The Jefferson's had the best main character. What's Happening? is the overall best. A lifetime achievement award goes to Different Strokes. Barney Miller gets an honorable mention. Chico and the Man does not belong in this discussion.
