I'm 41. Both are fantastic, but I probably give the slight edge to Superbad. American Pie 2 is an all timer though.

American Pie was my childhood with Stifler.

American Pie is like "Friends" for me. At the time I thought it was great. But as the years go on and I've gotten older it just doesn't hold up as well. I didn't love Superbad when it first came out, but now I find it much more re-watchable than American Pie.

They are pretty about the same on the believability scale.

I'll echo what most others have said in that this is heavily age dependent.

American Pie came out in the summer between 8th/9th grade for me. It was hilarious and raunchy but felt a taaaaad bit like it was for an ever so slightly older crowd considering we hadn't experienced firsthand much of what the movie was talking about. Superbad came out while I was in college so a lot of those antics resonated a bit more since we had those shared experiences.

I guess if forced to choose I'd say superbad is "better", but AP was more iconic if that makes any sense. If you were to randomnly stop someone on the street that's between the age of 35-55 and say "name a raunchy high school party movie" I bet AP would be the first answer for most.

I was probably 7 when AP came out so I wasn’t even aware of it. The first time I had ever watched it was probably not long before Superbad came out so watched both for the first time in my high school years so I’d say they’re both in the timeless teen film genre from my generation (90s kids).

Superbad has the edge for humor but American Pie gets the edge on high school nostalgia for rewatching ability. Both are awesome

American Pie, but Superbad is more quotable.

American Pie is just peak late 90s early 2000s and hot take, but I think American Pie 2 is better than both.

I was b/t my junior and senior year in HS when American Pie came out. It was great and I've watched it many times over. I still like Superbad better. I think it was the better movie and more rewatchable. Better actors and better directing.

I am on board with this. Just turned 37 and love them both because they both hit me at different times.

Superbad has much funnier writing/script. But I love both for nostalgia reasons.

Agree. If you want to even broaden it, I could have mentioned Cruel Intentions, Wild Things, Summer Catch, 10 Things I hate About You. Although I think Summer Catch is the only light “feel good” movie of those. Wild Things def has the most iconic scene of that era.

I really am surprised these movies stopped being made bc teens/20s have always spent money to see movies like that

JMO,

American Pie at the time had shock value. It was the beginning of a new trend of the raunchy R rated teen comedies of the 80's. It was great.

Superbad is great on its own though. It relies on a more clever style of comedy.

American Pie for me but only because I was a teenager when it came out and it felt like a documentary of our school.

Superbad was a better film but the cast of American Pie has held up better.

American Graffiti is better than both.

Man this is tough. American Pie was the shite when it came out in my early 20's. But Superbad was funny too.

I'd give the nod to American Pie. I think it's held up minus all the crappy sequels.

I'd like to throw Project X into the mix. It was a good movie too.

That Petey scene in AP 2 was hilarious.

Superbad is probably an objectively better movie

But American Pie was the peak of teen angst movies probaly when that genre was most in its prime.

I think Amercian Pie also does a better job of hitting that particular age market than superbad. Superbad was always much more adult comedy to me in the same sense of the Hangover movies

Eh, not sure that's true.
