Michael was also the smartest. He left college to fight in the war and then went back. I don't think Sonny or Fredo went to college, with how much grief they gave him about it. Michael was being groomed to be a legit great man, like a Senator. Everybody knew he was the future of the family. He didn't really give up anything. He raised all his neices and nephews (Sonny and Connie's kids), made his family super wealthy and powerful. I always thought he would have remarried and had more kids, after Kay was found in a ditch somewhere..

Fredo advised Hyman Roth and Johnny Olla of the family’s position/intentions on issues, which ultimately lead to attempts on Michael’s life. He also lied about meeting/knowing them to Michael. He has no honor. Fredo acknowledges his betrayal in Cuba and essentially admitted that he did it because he felt Michael left him out of the business. Fredo was selfish, unlike The Don, Sonny and Michael. He put himself before the family.

The only person in Michael's family to support his decision to enlist was Fredo. Connie said it best, he worshipped Michael.
I think Fredo is by far the most human of the brothers. Santino was the boss-in-waiting and Michael was the smart one. Fredo desperately craved some form of self-worth. Unfortunately for Michael, Roth exploited that.

Nor so sure about that.There's been speculation that he
was the person who slit the throats of the 2 assassins
who tried to take out Michael.
