Where does La La Land place on your "Best of 2010s" list?

Had it been any other decade, I wouldn't have even put it in my Top 100, but the 2010s being as weak as they were, it just might be in my Top 20. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling both did really well, and the direction and cinematography were both top notch. I found the music to be somewhat overrated though.

Certainly in front of moonlight.

First movie since Winnie the Pooh I walked out the theater due to a film’s lack of redeeming value.

I typically hate musicals and refuse to watch them, but I thought this movie was fantastic. Have seen it multiple times.

I like Emma Stone and Gosling in general but I wasnt crazy about this. It was a bit of a letdown because it was receiving a TON of praise when it came out. As mentioned before, it wasnt as strong of a decade of movies as the 90's and 00's, but it would probably be top 30-50ish. I havent made a list of the 10's so it might be higher.

This says more about you and your wife than it does the movie, but I'm sure you don't realize that.

I like it better than WHIPLASH, which is pretty high praise. I'm just bored to death by the trope of suffering for your art, or this justification that a person needs to be an antisocial a-hole to make something great. It's just a cliche used to justify pretty terrible behavior. I loved CHINATOWN, but Polnaski doesn't get to rape people as a reward. WHIPLASH, obviously, isn't as far down that path, but it does spend its run time justifying sociopathic behavior on part of both the student and the teacher because it results in great art.

But LA LA LAND is close to the idea that great art can come from joy. And we need more of that in our lives. We need people raging against the dying light, trying to save jazz that doesn't want to be saved.

But mainly, what makes LA LA LAND so great is that final act. There's a Hold Steady lyric that goes, "Dreams cost money, but money cost some dreams." And that's what happens here. They fell in love, had a year of bliss, but he so loved her that he sacrificed some of his dreams so hers could live. And his dream was fulfilled as well, just not in the way either expected. They were perfect for each other for just that time and then their lives moved on, and they were better for it. She attained her dream, learning to tell people to shove it and also to believe in herself and dare to be great. and he learned to compromise a little bit, and not try to hold on to the past so tightly it suffocates.

Also,the movie is generous enough that it gives space to other viewpoints John Legend's character's arguments are RIGHT, and the movie knows it, but it views him as a villain because we see it from Ryan Gosling's perspective. But he's not. And the movie lets him say his piece, nearly unrebutted.

here. i enjoyed it a lot, but not for all the praise it got. better than Moonlight for sure.
