I don't see how anyone could say the makers of D2 didn't know anything about hockey. I mean, one of most well known facts about the sport is that it is the sport of record for urban youths in the city of Los Angeles. They obviously knew that at any time of day in South Central, you can just roll up to some abandoned tennis court and find a world class hockey player in a game between the crips and the bloods.

Sorry, I'll say it again, but I thought D2 was terrible. Even as a kid

This is weird that this thread came up today. I was watching the original on HBOGo while on the treadmill the other day and wanted to start a thread. Growing up, we had MD2 on tape, so that one stuck out in my memory way more than the first one. A few things I noticed:
1. I forgot Bombay basically quit hockey in peewee, but because he grew up with a Northstar player, he got a tryout in the minors and was doing big things there in D2.
2. Jessie Hall was a whiny little bitch.
3. If you only remember the last 2 and forget the first one, you forget that Charlie sucked. He was one of the worst players, but Bombay was screwing his mom so he got the penalty shot.
4. Somehow they went from making the playoffs in an 8 (or so) team district to playing the Minnesota State Championship.
5. Banks's dad literally wears a hawks jacket and sits with Hawks fans in the last game.
6. After Banks, Guy Germaine was the second best player on the team.
7. I don't remember if they addressed Bombay dating Charlie's mom in D2, but I can't imagine it fully addressed the gravity of the situation of Bombay breaking Charlie's heart by splitting up with her.
8. Peter was a little twat.
9. I think the kid from the movie First Kid played a young Gordon Bombay.

I learned a lot about hockey's role in predominantly African-American communities from D2. In addition to what you said, I had no idea that it was a thriving pastime in Trinidad and Tobago. I'm just glad the director decided to be tasteful and not stereotype their inhabitants by making them wear something like tie-dye uniforms and play bongo drums in the stands.

On a side note, how many lives were saved, do you think, by inner city youth turning towards hockey instead of gangs and drugs after seeing D2? Hundreds? Thousands?

Not even Joshua Jackson? Reprising his role as Charlie as a coach of a new team?

I'd watch that movie if JJ came back

I don't know, but I hope Jack Reilly makes another appearance.

D2 is the only reason these movies matter; to me, it is the best one. And it is the best one because it is absolutely ridiculous, not in spite of it. I'm mildy amused by 1 and 3, but D2 is great.

I hated D2. Only good thing about D2 was Iceland vs US.
I'd go:
D1
D3
D2
I'd go:
D1
D3
D2

I was a Hawks fan and it was complete bullshite how Bombay rigged the system to get Adam on the Ducks.
It's not worth winning if you can't win big!!!!!

Solid bump.
This question needs an answer dammit. With all the remakes being made why the hell can't we get Charlie as the next Bombay?

I am still up set with the lack of coverage the Junior Goodwill Games have gotten following this movie

Gonna have to be Zombie Jack Reilly because Lane Smith died a few years ago.

I love the movies because of nostalgia but how in the frick did they go from being the worst team in the league then to a state championship then to playing the best young players in the world. D1 to D2. These were pee wee kids then all of a sudden they are teens?

The series is amazing. The worst team in the Minneapolis youth league becomes the state champs in a matter of months.
Then, Gordon Bombay leads the national team to the Junior Goodwill Games championship. What is most amazing about the championship run is that the team's nucleus consists of those same Minnesota youth league kids. He doesn't need kids from Denver, New York, or Chicago. Just add Benny the Jet Rodriguez, Julie the Cat, and the worst SNL cast member of all time, and boom! Championship.
But his old friend Orion is an incredible coach, too. His Prep school is so talented that other than Banks, none of the world champions can even make his varsity roster.
And I realize we live in South Louisiana, but who knew youth hockey was so big elsewhere? They were getting prime time slots on TBS and even back-ups for the youth national team were getting recognized on Rodeo Drive by female fashion sales associates.
And all of this In the same town where the world's greatest hockey player of all time is basically known for being the dad of some slutty chick who posts lingerie pics on Twitter rather than his prodigious hockey talent.
