Last of the Mohicans, Braveheart, Gladiator, The Patriot...

As historically inaccurate as these movies may be, they’re still fricking awesome.

Is this genre dead? I hate to get into politics on the movie board...but are these “white man” epics essentially dead with where Hollywood and politics is headed?

Damn I want another Gladiator type film, not Gladiator 2 dammit Ridley. I’m talking about top notch original historical epics told by our best directors.

Think about the wealth of history there is to tell.

Alexander the Great
Napoleon
Ghengis Khan
Think about all the untold Revolutionary War or Civil War tales
French and Indian War
Julia’s Caesar
Hannibal
Charlamagne

Come on!

Because we just got 1917, Dunkirk, Midway.

We’ve also had a lot of premium cable and streaming series set in different time periods.

And there are other lesser known historical films from recent years if you look.

I’d love to see a good movie based on The Song of Roland. But “big” historical epics are a big gamble. They’ve always required an A-list director and producer to get done. And even then, you might end up with a Troy or, worse, an Alexander.

ETA: I see you mentioned Alexander the Great. LOL.

I suspect the current wokeness is going to put a damper on a lot of those projects.

Yep,

I don’t see how we get a civil war movie again for a while unless southerners are vampire nazis.

Which is a shame. Band of Brothers - Civil War with a season for each side could be incredible.

I would like another well executed epic focused on the Bolsheviks and the Russian Revolution.

Reds was pretty good.

Doctor Zhivago was fantastic.

John Adams one one of the best I've ever seen. The Hatfields and McCoys was really well done as well.

Don't forget 300 on the silver screen.

I disagree. A Civil War movie or television series could be done taking a three-sided approach: Union soldier, Confederate soldier, enslaved person. Tell three stories which eventually all come together at some point then diverge to tell new stories. Both the Union and Confederate sides had flaws that today's audience could relate to, and as more history of the emancipated is known there's more opportunity to explore & include strong storylines.

I'd say it would be best to avoid focusing on the famous Civil War figures and more on people the public can relate to.

The Cortez story is epic, read Prescott's Conquest of Mexico.

Could be turned into a 4 season show with ease.

Blood on an epic scale, as the Aztec's had sacrificed many thousands during the period of the conquest.

Greed on an epic scale, as seen in the retreat form Tenochtitlán by the Spanish.

Sex on a smaller scale with many of soldiers in Cortez army had native wives.

The winner of the conquest, smallpox destroyed the Aztecs along with many over tribes around Tenochtitlán and the Spanish march routes over Mexico.

The epic fight of Cortez's clerk and the Aztec warrior in Spanish armor and weapon, would be nice on film.

There is a lot of politics to the story.

I thought the Marco Polo was very well done on Netflix.

I'm not sure you're gonna get much outta Hollywood except WWII of course...seems to be the only history that exists.

Masters of the Air is coming, another Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman involved series with a $200 million budget. Focused on members of the Air Force during WWII.

Masters of the Air bad writing, had a run in with one of the main writers years ago.

The script and the small video they did to sell the show is one reason it has been so long getting out.

This show has been in the works for a very long time.

Still a wealth of story there. Just forget about the turd of a movie. Separately, Troy was a pretty good movie by the way.

I still can't believe no one has touched that yet. It has the makings of epic television.

It was ok, I was just thinking of it in terms of being a big gamble. Though looking it up now, it did do better box office than I was thinking, just more international than domestic.

I'm still wishing they would make more of the Master and Commander series.

There’s no way this will ever happen (save for that John Wayne movie). Genghis and his sons are some of the most prolific mass murderers and rapists in all of human history. 24% of modern Mongolians are direct descendants of Genghis and he’s the ancestor of 8% of all of Central Asia. Total it’s estimated that .5% of the entire world is descended from him, and he lived less than a thousand years ago. Making Genghis look heroic is like making Hitler and Stalin look heroic.
