Irréversible is the best French language movie I've seen in a while. Simply engrossing.

Most attention this board has ever given to a French-language movie. Considering no one is actually going to watch it, and no one knows what's actually in it (I don't count scanning for 5 minutes as watching it), kinda weird how many wanna keep talking about it

Imagine thinking this is the problem that should be highlighted when discussing pedophile porn on Netflix.

Haven't watched it, but based on the description by the creator, it's probably harmless.

What's not harmless is that a 10-14 year old girl can easily watch the movie and interpret it completely wrong. However, this is a problem with Netflix in general and applies to many movies and shows.

I haven't watched and won't. From what I've read, it's mostly about the sexualization of young girls in our culture, a very adult topic. Was there this much controversy over Pretty Baby, with Brooke Shields playing a 12 year old prostitute in 1978? I was 17 and didn't really pay attention at the time. However, that movie was much less accessible because it was in theaters. So much is accessible to children and young teens now. That's the real problem!

Just another breakthrough in the godless, morally depraved left's attempt to normalize pedophilia and drag America into the pit.

I'd never heard of this movie before, so I went and read about it. Disgusting.

t would be like if requiem for a dream skipped the 2nd half and just ran with the first part when herion made everything great and life was grand. then it ended. would that really be an indictment of using heroin
Underserved point is one that I made in the other thread:

quote:

Can you imagine a grown adult director and choreographer having little girls twerk?

That had to be scripted, storyboarded, choreographed and arranged, taught to the girls, rehearsed, and shot. . .and probably re-shot a dozen times. Who could do that, but a pedo. . .or at least pedo-adjacent?

I mean just ballpark the amopunt of time that was put into that scene, by adults.

Just despicable.

There was controversy, but we didn't have the internet. I don't remember it playing in the local theaters. As conservative as Baton Rouge was, I doubt it played here. It made Brooke Shields a famous child model and got her in the door for her teen acting roles. It was a movie people whispered about with some shock.

The critics reviewed it like any other movie. They saw it as historic subject matter. I'm pretty sure that it played on HBO or Showtime. It wasn't "banned" for the most part. I think it came out on VHS and DVD, I know you can pay to stream it.

I met the author of the history of Storyville that they claimed to use as the historic reference. He was pissed about the film, mostly because they got so much wrong. Plus centering it around a child made his history book look bad.

Off of memory. . .

Canada banned it.

UK released a heavily censored version, and gave THAT version an X rating.

Caught a smattering of protests in the US from the Falwell crowd.

The filmmaker is a woman who has expressly criticized and objected to the social media pressure on young girls to be more sexual. I think that's the point of her work.

The vast majority of the criticism of her movie(not surprisingly) has come from people who have never seen the film.
That is quite typical, sadly, when it comes to moral outrage over movies, books, etc. Clueless people tend to pile on.

I don't know, this doesn't seem harmless. This seems like an excuse to watch a bunch of sexualized preteens for nothing more than prurient reasons.

As suggestive as those descriptions sound, unless one has seen the scenes and context within the film, it's impossible to make an informed judgment.

There are a million different ways to show that. As a matter of fact why not make a movie about the fallout of such actions, the mental and physical agony that a child is dealing with sexual trauma that is both physical and mental?

No, lets not show true horror that would open some eyes. No instead lets make the trauma front and center in gory detail. To top that off we are going to end the movie with the hero returning to her life like nothing happened.

It's a-holes like you who cant comprehend the damage done. I've seen the scars first hand. There is no healing. And that is why there is no defending this filth.

U.S.—Netflix is embroiled in controversy yet again with its new documentary Puppy Murder, a show where the director kills puppies to teach you that murdering puppies is bad.

quote:

"I thought about just making a documentary where I didn't actually murder puppies to make the point, but it just wasn't powerful enough," said director Amélie Le'Charpentier (who is, by the way, a woman of color and an immigrant, so think about that before you criticize her). "I drew on my own experiences having observed puppy murder a number of times and decided I would just drop anvils and pianos on them and stuff so you could see how terrible puppy murder is."

quote:

Many people spoke up against the film but were labeled "triggered conservatives" and "scandal-mongers" since they obviously just didn't get the message of the film, which very clearly teaches that puppy murder is bad.

The show has been a big success among psychopaths and future mass murderers and will see a sequel called Baby Murder next fall.

I remember there was controversy, and even possibly some boycotts boy those ' crazy religious conservatives ', but then the world moved on. I never saw Pretty Baby. Maybe caught some of Little Darlings , when it came on HBO, but I can't say for certain. Foxes, I do remember watching, or at least part of it as well. 1980 seemed like a hell of a busy year for movies.

Looks like YouTube removed it. I'm actually surprised about that.

Hell, the people crying out against this movie are the same ones that binge watch Toddlers and Tiaras.

How would Cuties compare to a movie like Kids? 11 year olds over sexualized in society and on screen vs 15-16 year olds engaging in overt sexual acts and drug use? Both movies had actors that were actually the same age as the characters they were portraying. 16 is obviously way different than 11 but full on overt sexual activity is also way different than suggestive dancing. BIG uproar around Kids back in the day.

I think Kids and requiem for a dream are good comparisons.

how do you criticize something in a movie without showing what you're critical of? that's the dilemma for cuties. One difference between cuties and kids is the pedophilia concern. What might disgust me, or any normal person, is a turn-on to others.

I think the major issue is how Netflix marketed the movie. the movie poster implies a glorification.

Exactly...pedophiles were turned on by "Home Alone" and nobody wanted that movie banned.

I did not think it was a good movie...I thought it went a bit far with some of the camera shots (you could have made the same point without going to that extreme)...but, young girls dealing with puberty are bombarded with hypersexualized messages all the time.

Instead of trying to ban it...parents should use it as a teachable moment. Discuss their bodies and changes to come.

Not to mention the main character is faced with an ultra conservative family life at home.

I agree

I don't Think Netflix did anything to avoid the controversy. They actively fed into it.
